"To be gay, or not to be gay."That is not the question. There is no question there, because you cannot stop being gay, other than (God forbid) by traveling to the place Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet called "The undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveller returns." That was a poetic euphemism for death. And it is the only way to stop being heterosexual or homosexual. Surely no sane person would wish it upon a fellow human being. As Michael Bussee stated in his renunciation of Exodus International, he worried that some people might have been driven to suicide because of the grief he needlessly inflicted upon them when he was with that organization. His concern was justified -- this happens in alarming numbers, particularly among gay youth. Because of the scorn heaped upon them, at times, tragically, even by their own parents, they feel trapped and hopeless. If, by chance, you are a young gay person reading this, take heart and have hope: There is nothing wrong with you, and God loves you. Please read everything on this website for more understanding.
"Our revels now are ended"
Here's the whole story in a nutshell:
Every reputable medical organization in the world has stated unequivocally that a person's sexuality is not something that can be changed, and most strongly caution that attempting to do so is dangerous. (If your doctor told you that you should undergo a medical procedure that the A.M.A. says is unnecessary and dangerous, would you do it? I would certainly not. I'd put a lot of distance between myself and such a quack.) A number of organized religions, on the other hand, claim that changing their sexual orientation is precisely what gay persons should do. They beat around the bush -- but eventually they admit they don't really know how to make this change, and that it's impossible anyway. Now I must ask you, honestly: Who in his right mind would put himself in the hands of such fools, to be tampered with and possibly suffer great mental anguish? They claim a Biblical basis for their beliefs -- but I have demonstrated clearly that they are wrong in my other essays on this website. PLEASE READ THEM.
Sexual orientation is fixed at a very early age; possibly before birth. It is, by admission of even many of the staunchest anti-gay crusaders, unchangeable. The only question is "to act or not to act gay." And let me be perfectly blunt: That is none of your business.
To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark -- Act 3, Scene 1
Whether it is nobler or more desirable to endure the slings and arrows of bigotry and ignorance, and force ones' self to live a lie; to pretend to "change" one of the deepest, most personal components of his personality; of this there cannot be a shadow of doubt: That is a hideous prospect, and there is nothing noble about it. Keep the "reparative therapy" of this evil "ex-gay" madness far away from me. I cannot change this about myself, there is no reason in heaven or on earth why I should, and I would not do so, even if it were possible. Gay people are, like our straight brothers and sisters, beings made in God's own image. He loves us the way we are. It is His will that you should do the same. To do otherwise is to purposely choose to be unkind.That would be a very unwise choice, indeed.
