If you are one of those people who often have problems starting up a conversation with a random stranger, and end up looking like an idiot as you squirm and stutter your way through any gathering you may stumble upon, worry not, for help is at hand! The Wondrously Random World's 'How To ...' team bring you 'How To Start A Conversation In Three Easy Steps'.
A simple and effective technique, this will have everyone around you in stitches (Disclaimer: The Wondrously Random World cannot guarantee that the laughter will be with you and not at you.), after your witty comments and zany openers. If you need to develop your communication skills, look no further than The Wondrously Random World.

Quite an easy one to remember this. When embarking on a conversation starter, you cannot just launch into a long sentence, as this appears planned, and so makes you appear contrived. Instead you must warm the audience up. The simple way to do this, also known as STEP 1 is :

You say: So .....

Once you have completed this, move to STEP 2.

Getting a bit more complicated now. Your next move is to introduce an interesting, and yet unexpected subject into the conversation starter. This is easily achieved by just blurting out whatever comes into your head at the time, or by looking around yourself for inspiration. If you are still struggling, try using our random topic list below. So after having chosen a random topic, you can now complete STEP 2:

You say: {Insert Random Topic Here} .....

We must place a warning here. If you happen to be talking to, for example, a woman with large breasts, it would be unsuitable to use, say, silicon implants, as your random topic, as this may cause personal injury (Disclaimer: The Wondrously Random World does not accept responsability for you getting beaten to a bloody pulp after having used this method, as it is not our fault).

Struggling for a random topic? Try these:
  • Laughter
  • Oranges
  • Conversations
  • Pseudoantidisestablishmentarianism
  • Haemoglobin
  • Left-handers
  • Safety Nets
  • Guillotines
  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Waistcoats
  • Aubergines
  • Differential Calculus

Once you have completed this, move onto STEP 3.

Now comes the crucial, make or break time of your conversation starter. Get this wrong and you may as well have stayed silent. You must focus in on a useful fact about your random topic, and use this useful fact to pose a question. This could be quite difficult, especially if you lack knowledge in your chosen random subject, so we have kindly provided another list, detailing generic responses. Now do STEP 3:

You say: EITHER {Insert Fact about your Random Topic Here}, isn't it?
OR {Insert Fact about your Random Topic Here}, aren't they?

Example
Say the random topic you have chosen is 'Laughter'. You happen to know that laughter is funny, so your STEP 3 would appear thus:

You say: Funny, isn't it?

However, it is often difficult to pinpoint one fact on a subject, so here are generic facts that could fit with any random topic:
  • Good
  • Useful
  • Pretty
  • Nice
  • Bonkers
  • Marvellous
  • Brilliant

You now have your conversation starter, from which you should expect a response of some kind. If none are forthcoming, please feel free to repeat the process, as required.

In case you are struggling to link the three steps together, here is an example. Our chosen random topic is 'Oranges' and we are using the fact that they are orange:

You say: So, Oranges, orange aren't they?

This is as you can see, a quite brilliant opening line.
