Halloween Poem

Let the Children Be

'Twas Halloween night and all through the sky,

The clouds hid the moon as the bats glided by.

I was dressed all in white in my mama's old sheet,

Walking with friends down the ghost-haunted street.

All the kids were dressed in bright costumed array,

While flashlights and street lights guided our way.

We giggled and laughed as we hurried to each door,

Ringing or knocking, then laughing some more.

There were pumpkins aglow and skeletons dangling,

Scarecrows and shadows and silver chains clanging.

Grownups in masked faces opened doors in greeting,

As we stood with our bags and waited for treating.

Some people say that we should not have this night,

That too many kids are harmed by the sights or the fright -

But it's the one time a year when we can pretend to be

Someone else for a while, not you - not even me.

Let them celebrate now, as the bats glide on by,

For childhood is brief, like the blink of an eye.

Listen to their laughter and let the children be

Someone else for a while, not you and not even me.

Jack O' Lantern

Place a candle deep within,

to show the Jacko' lantern's grin.

Set him outside on the front stair,

or in the window to give a good scare.

He'll greet Trick or Treaters of the night,

with his great jagged teeth and fiery eyes.

The little ghosts, and angels, and monsters all,

will be guided up the steps to the front door,

where they will fill their sacks and buckets of candy,

with a "Trick or Treat" and a "Thank you" handy.

Then they'll turn to bid adieu to the pumpkin of light,

who guides them back down to the street in the night.

Bats and Black Cats

A friend of mine once said,

bats are little rats with wings.

If that is true, then black cats do

love those little flying things.

They flit and flutter one way and another,

in the night sky, across the moon,

but only the cat can catch them

with one magic leap and it's the poor bat's doom.

she brings it to the witch's house,

for some secret recipe -- but if the cat

should miss, and the lucky bat flutters away,

our furry friend finds another place

that night to fall asleep.

IT'S HALLOWEEN

It's Halloween! It's Halloween!

The moon is full and bright

And we shall see what can't be seen

On any other night.

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,

Grinning goblins fighting duels,

Werewolves rising from their tombs,

Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gowns

we haunt the street

And knock on doors

for trick or treat.

Tonight we are

the king and queen,

For oh tonight

it's Halloween!

Ghost And Goblins

It was a cold and gloomy, October night,

with eyes wide, filled with fright,

she hurried along, the sidewalk dark,

as she neared the entrance, to the park.

All around her, were ghostly shapes,

some with fangs, shrouded in black capes.

A couple old hags, most suredly witches,

others with bodies, covered with stitches.

As she scurried along, in shadows deep,

up behind her, she hears something creep.

With pounding heart, she began to run faster,

knowing she's the one, the thing is after.

On her shoulder, a hand tightly grips,

with a loud scream, she suddenly trips.

Glancing around, she sees it's only her brother,

hand over mouth, a laugh trying to smother.

There's really nothing, we should fear,

for it's only, one night of the year,

when ghosts and goblins, can be seen,

so please have a safe and happy, Halloween.
