I got the idea for "The Anvil" from a couple of sources. First was a quote I heard several years ago, I can't remember from who. "The Bible is the anvil that has broken a million hammers." This refers to the survival of the Bible through two milleniums of human history. Through nearly 2,000 years people have tried to destroy the Bible, through burning the manuscripts and books, through burning, beheading, and torturing those involved in translation work, or through "intellectual" assault, such as the "Higher Criticism" movement in the 1800's. The assault continues to this day, but God has preserved His Word through all of man's efforts to destroy it. In recent years, during the uprising and genocide in Rwanda, the diskettes and files containing Bible translation work there were miraculously preserved. The other inspiration for "The Anvil" came from someone in my family tree. My great-grandfather, Luther B. Owens, was a preacher and a blacksmith. My father can remember hearing him preach. He says that "he preached the same way that he blacksmithed.....He would heat it up white hot, then beat the devil out of it!" The anvil is a tool of the blacksmith; it is the place where useful implements and fine craftsmanship are hammered into shape. Likewise, God uses his Anvil, the Bible, as a place to "hammer" his people into the shape that He desires. So my website, "The Anvil" is dedicated to the Bible (and to the God who inspired it) and to my great-grandfather Owens, the blacksmith- preacher.
