The _________________________________ is an alliance comprised of education officials, music teachers, parents, industry representatives, and concerned arts and musical performing organizations. The purpose of this association is lo conduct an awareness campaign designed to preserve and promote music education in the school systems. In the 1990s a climate of government restraint plus a variety of external pressures threaten the survival of music programs in many school boards nationwide. We are deeply concerned about this.

We in music education believe that education in the arts, and specifically in music, is an important key to our children's intellectual and emotional development. A curriculum that does not include the arts deprives our children of a well-rounded education. Not only does this impoverished curriculum put our children's ,education at risk, but it puts the very culture of our country at risk.

Economic and business advisers urge educators to assist students in developing creative thinking skills, commitment to task, self-esteem, imagination and the ability to work as a team, in order to prepare for the workplace. All of these abilities, and more, can be superbly addressed through music education activities; indeed, music teachers have been promoting them as part of their programs for many years. Music education also opens the door to various cultures, lo exploration, and understanding of the past and present. This enhances our awareness of our own history and the history and traditions of others.

Members of __________ would be delighted to meet with you at your convenience to discuss our concerns regarding the current state and future of music education in _________________________. These concerns include the present curriculum restructuring, the need for qualified music teachers at all levels and last, but not least financial matters. We believe that __________________ could be a resource to the Ministry when planning for the future.
