"Ska revival isn't cool you stupid fuck. The bands are only in it for the bucks. And if you don't believe me you're schmuck. But the trend will die out with any luck..." Those words taken from the famous Propagandhi's "Ska Sucks". So many people have heard, even played the song with their bands. Not only in the underground, I've seen a non-underground band played the song on a total ska gig in Yogyakarta, last year. Beside the word "ska sucks", people often shout the words "fuck you rudy" too, to abuse the rudeboys/ rudegirls. And some people even make 'em in stickers and other merchandises. What's wrong with ska, that some people abusing it hardly? The answer is that ska got nothing's wrong. The music is fun, easy listening, and makes people want to skank. But maybe because of those fun given by ska, most common people outside the underground society can easily accept it. Then major record labels attracted to exploit ska as a big profit-maker. Even No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom, which contains only a piece of ska, had received double platinum, only in Indonesia. Can you imagine it ?!
I still remember, the period when ska become a booming trend in Indonesia. There's so many new ska bands, and various kinds of ska gigs are held every week. But that's not all, cause th TV stations and radio stations competed playing videos or songs from the most popular ska bands at the time. Even the teenage magazines showing the ska fashion on their mode pages. But they looked like shit...
And I still remember too, the time when ska is getting out of date and replace by another fresh trend. No more ska gigs, the ska bands disappeared, no more videos and songs from Noin Bullet, Jun Fan Gung Foo, Kemuri, etc played on TV and radio stations. And the magazines never talk about ska anymore. The worst thing is a reality that the trendy rudeboys/rudegirls are now saying "ska sucks" too, after they changed their style following the latest trend, of course. If we try to understand the meaning of the song "Ska Sucks" as good as possible, we will know that it written to express that the (real) rudeboys/rudegirls don't want to see ska become a trend, which is easy come-easy go and then become such a butt and trampled down.
