This all began in April of
1998. The Phipps Gallery in Hudson,
Wisconsin was presenting an exhibition titled “Passionate Obsessions”. A group that included Jill Waterhouse, Denny
Sponsler, Bill Ploetz and Ray Shudy had gotten together to view the
exhibition. Walking along the St. Croix
afterward, we had a conversation about public artworks, the community
importance of grottos and other visionary spaces. We also discussed the role they play in helping people to
experience and contemplate the simple joys of human thoughts and beliefs.
That conversation began a yearlong exploration
of spaces, gardens, building materials and techniques that allowed us to begin this project. After two and a half years,
we are nearing completion of the project.
These pictures tell the story.
