International Women's Day
Sunday, 8th March, 1992
First proposed by Clara Zetkin (a representative of the Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, 1910), the origins of the day actually goes back to 1857 when a group of New York women garment workers demonstrated against their working conditions.
Fifty one years later, on 8th March, 1908, a march was held to commemorate the garment workers' protest.
Clara Zetkin called however for all women to link their fight for equal rights with tthe fight to preserve International Peace -- and so the first International Womens' Day was celebrated on 8th March, 1911, with more than a million women publicly participating.
In many countries it has now become an opportunity for women to review the progress they've made in their struggle for Equality, Peace, and social progress.
In 1977 the General Assembly of the United Nations organisation passed a resolution inviting all countries to proclaim, in accordance with their national traditions and customs, one day of the year as "Internation Womens' Day", and for many this has become 8th March. It is, however, (according to our roving reporter, Elsie Procter) the first time the event has been held in Stoke-on-Trent. We wish it every success!
