As "Bed-head", Stu provides The BRASS BED with songs, arrangements, artwork, film & concepts...He sings, plays bass, trumpet, valve trombone, flugelhorn, double-whistle, geee-tar, zither, tympani, organ, didgeridoo, melodica, synth, tack piano & junkshop items...Multi-instrumentalist, multi-media artist & harbinger of good-taste-with-a-twist... Stu began his musical life on 2nd trumpet in the school Big Band, then fell into bass & guitar, forming his first 3-piece in 1979. Created several bands within the unsupportive Perth musical environment & finally, landed & stayed in Melbourne, while fronting the cult pastiche-rock trio ORGANISM in the early 90's. He played in countless bands of all styles until getting the call-up for KIM SALMON & THE SURREALISTS in '95. They toured Australia, Europe & USA in '96, also releasing some great records, including the album "Ya Gotta Let Me Do My Thing" In '97, Stu formed THE BRASS BED, who released their debut EP "low key" to acclaim that same year. THE SURREALISTS morphed into KIM SALMON & THE BUSINESS in '99, adding a brass section. In spare moments, Stu also played bass with LUXEDO, Barb Waters,
SPENCER P JONES' Last Gasp,
Red Lantern, The Soldiers and various KIM SALMON projects (The Scientists 2000, Solo Band 2002/3...).
Stu produced The BRASS BED's debut album of 2001 "Save Your Breath", also playing songwriter and bass & horns.
He began playing bass for BILLY MILLER around 2001, and joined THE ROYAL DAVE GRANEY SHOW in 2003. That same year he formed a duo with Anna Burley (Killjoys) playing original & found duets. Stu released his debut solo EP "Resonance" in Sept '03, & his first solo album "Devil & Daughter" in April 2004, both out thru audrey records. In 2004, he formed a new moody, low-down band STU THOMAS & THE CELESTIALS, in which he played guitar & sang. This band also featured Brass BedFellows Rhys Braddock (Gerda Blank) & Mike Noga (The Drones), plus guitarist/artist and great friend Mark DiMarzio. He toured Europe once more in Oct-Dec 2004, playing bass for THE SCIENTISTS and finished with a successful Solo Club Tour of Berlin. During 2005, Stu formed another band, favouring a more spooky surf sound, called THE STU THOMAS PARADOX. In 2006, Stu did many Australian city & outback shows with DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE as a trio, also releasing a CD "Keepin' It Unreal". KIM SALMON & THE SURREALISTS with Stu on bass, reformed to play Azkena Rock Fest, Spain, and then Melbourne in late '06. In Jan 2007, Stu completed The BRASS BED's "Super 8 Video LP" DVD, a project started in 2003, which he produced, edited and authored, also providing the music, artwork & some short films. Currently Stu fronts THE STU THOMAS PARADOX, and plays bass & baritone guitar in: DAVE GRANEY & the LURID YELLOW MIST and KIM SALMON & THE SURREALISTS. Stu enjoys the bastardization of styles within music, film, art, life...
