Summertime brings heat, bikinis and blockbuster movies. This summer is no different. Get ready for 120 degree heat, guys in Speedos and "The X-Men." Movie production companies release their best and brightest each summer in hopes of cleaning out the wallets of kids who are out of school and have nothing to do. Some of the highest grossing films such as "Armageddon" and "South Park," premiered in summer pasts. With each passing year companies spend more and more money in hopes of attracting more viewers. But after seeing lackluster movies like "Wild Wild West" hemorrhage money, companies have decided on quality and not quantity. The most anticipated movie will most likely be "The X-Men." Previews have barely started to run in theaters and because the anticipation was so huge, the cast has already appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. "The X-Men" movie was in pre-production for three years and production companies that specialize in comic related movies are aching to get "X-Men" out after box office bombs like "Steel" and "Batman and Robin" almost destroyed their businesses. Another anticipated movie this summer is "Mission: Impossible 2" starring Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. The movie is also two years late because of contract commitments Cruise had to the belated "Eyes Wide Shut." Other action movies expected this summer are "The Patriot," "Battlefield Earth," "Gone in Sixty Seconds," "Shaft," "Perfect Storm," and "Shanghai Noon." Comedy movies are in abundance this summer. "The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps" is prophesied to be the best of them all. Others are "Big Momma's House," "Road Trip," "Me, Myself, and Irene," "Small Time Crooks," "Screwed," and "Loser." Kids movies are also a big draw this summer. The very first Claymation movie called "Chicken Run" will feature the voice of Mel Gibson. Another Pokemon movie is expected this summer called "Pokemon 2000." "Rocky and Bullwinkle" will have a digital Rocky and Bullwinkle. Boris and Natasha will be played by Jason Alexander and Rene Russo, with Robert DeNiro as Fearless Leader. Others are "Titan A.E." and "Dinosaurs" which cost $80 million because Disney built an all new digital animation studio in the process. Though these movies promise to make millions by their opening weekends, other movies have promise but probably will not bring in high grossing numbers because of either their distribution or their advertisement. Movies like "Coyote Ugly" and "Cecil B. Demented" received very good reviews at the fall film festivals where they debuted, but their advertising has been minimal and that always means low numbers. This problem, unfortunately, happens a lot because production companies can make a movie, but they do not sell the movie. Each summer there are movies that do not do anything but blow smoke. Movies like "The Cell" have received bad reviews just from the preview footage because of how much gore they have. The movie is currently in the editing room so they can cut out just enough so it doesn't get an NC-17 rating. With all the movies coming out this summer, it is certain that people will have another good reason to go into the theaters besides the air conditioning.
