Last month, Lodi Unified School District ended its contract with Pepsi after Coca-Cola bid more money. Pepsi machines have been kicked off campus. Profits made with the Coca-Cola Company will be shared with the district to support many student activities. The antipathy seen around campus is discouraging. Some of us do not trust mega-corperations and think that Coca-Cola is exploiting and brainwashing schools. And some of use are even upset because we prefer Pepsi over Coca-Cola. They both taste about the same, anyway. These criticisms do nothing for the school and community; instead, they create disunity among the school and staff. Coca-Cola offered four million dollars to the district. What kind of person would be upset about that? The money we get from the contract will be used to support students' activities such as choir, drama, speech, journalism, and cheer. A lot of us simply do not appreciate the district's contract with Coca-Cola. Here we have a corporation generous enough to offer a lot of money to fill student activities' coffers, but there are a number of us who do not like Coke's "invasion." Although Coca-Cola's monopoly in the soda machines may be "all business," at least we get something that we lack. This antipathy and lack of appreciation also brings something else to mind. It is pretty ironic that a mega-corporation "cares" to contribute something to the schools after our won community fails four times to pass a bond. The community has had four chances to contribute something to the schools, but no bonds were passed. What does this say about our community? Something is wrong here. A mega-corporation did something that the community should have done. But enough about that. Sometimes it seems as if all we do is complain about what we do not have. And when action is being taken to administer to our complaints, criticism arises. With this kind of disunity, anything good trying to be done will be discouraged. More appreciation should be shown for LUSD's contract with Coca-Cola. Sure, the Coca-Cola propaganda may be annoying and some may experience a separation anxiety from Pepsi, but the benefits from the contract wil outweigh these petty discomforts. We did not get anything after the bond failures, but here is a little something that is offered for us to put to good use. And it definitely is better than nothing.
