Student tackles sports and schedule

Even though a 24-hour day may not be long enough for senior Cynthia Anderson's busy schedule, she still manages to compete in sports all three seasons during the year.

Anderson has been playing right front and right back for the volleyball team, forward in the basketball team and third base for softball since her freshman year. This year, she is also the right guard for the powder puff football team. Even before high school, Anderson was active in sports. She played softball for Port City and played basketball at Delta Sierra Middle School.

Besides being involved in sports all three seasons, Anderson squeezes school work, religious seminary studies and choir into her busy schedule.

"My day is basically from five in the morning to seven in the evening," Anderson said.

During the week, she has to wake up early each morning to attend Mormon scripture studies, go to school, choir, and show up for practice after school.

Juggling so many activities can take a toll on Anderson's energy levels.

"Sometimes I fall asleep in class," Anderson said.

Anderson occasionally cuts practice short to make time for her other activities.

What keeps Anderson up and ready to juggle sports and her busy schedule? Commitment.

"Playing sports keeps me busy and gives me the self-discipline I want," Anderson said.

She is active in sports also for the fun and leisure of it. Being active in sports has also given Anderson the opportunity to interact with other students on the team. She has them around as company during the week and they go out on weekends.

Coach Pam Eaton of the women's varsity softball team describes Anderson as a good leader - she is first to grab equipment and is always on task.

"Anderson is not very loud and verbal, but she leads by example," Eaton said.

Eaton believes that Anderson is a strong defensive player and has a shot at all-league since she currently has the highest batting average on the team.

After finishing high school, Anderson plans to be a teacher. She says that she will take sports seriously if she makes any teams. If she does not, she will have sports as a side dish in college.
