Brrrrr! It may be cold outside, but senior Lindsey Hawes and sophomore Yovana Gomez really heat things up when they step onto the ice.

Senior Lindsey Hawes plays ice hockey for the Stockton Colts, a part of the Northern California Division. Because his father played semi-pro hockey in his mid 20s, Hawes has grown up with a love for the sport.

"Ever since I could walk I've owned a pair of skates," Hawes said. "I was brought up in the hockey environment."

The Colts practice once a week at Oak Park Ice Arena at 10:15 p.m.

"Practice never really gets in the way of my schedule," Hawes said. "It's not like I'm really doing anything at 10 o'clock on a school night."

Hawes plays hockey during more than just the winter months. The season starts in September and lasts at least until April, depending on how far the team advances.

"We were second in the state last year," Hawes said.

Hawes enjoys the familial feeling he has with his teammates.

"We've been playing together for six years," Hawes said. "We've grown up together. I really enjoy being with the guys."

As the team's center, Hawes's favorite thing about ice hockey is the fast-paced intensity.

"It's a full-contact, fast-paced sport," Hawes said. "It can get pretty intense."

Sophomore Yovana Gomez melts the ice three times a week when she practices figure skating, also at Oak Park.

My parents started me out in gymnastics and ballet," Gomez said. "But one day when I was watching TV, I saw figure skating, and I told my parents, 'Hey, this is what I want to do.'"

Gomez has been skating since she was three years old.

At first Gomez skated individually, but she soon turned to team competition where she had more fun.

Gomez practices skating by herself, but she is also a part of team that competes in synchronized skating. Her team earned fourth at Pacific Coast, the national qualifying competition.

"Competitions are really fun," Gomez said. "We get to travel a lot. We're going to LA for a big competition in March."

Gomez is on Bear Creek's soccer and diving teams as well.

"Soccer is my favorite," Gomez said. "It's less competitive and more of a hobby to me."

Spending so much time practicing her figure skating helps her in her other activities like soccer, swimming and school. Gomez has used the dedication, teamwork and enjoyment she learned in figure skating in her other activities to be successful.
