Though the Lady Bruin basketball season has ended, one female athlete continues to sink shot after shot.

Last November, junior Lolo Johnson participated with the Bruins in a St. Mary's basketball tournament, unaware of how far her performance at the tournament would take her. Johnson managed another one of her all-star performances.

A few weeks following the tournament Johnson received a letter that was probably the most exciting news she has ever received in her short basketball career: she was invited, based on her performance at the tournament, to try out for the California Junior National Basketball Team. The tryouts would be held at Las Vegas.

"I didn't know that anyone was watching the tournament to recruit for the Junior National Team," Johnson said. "I was really surprised when I got the letter."

On March 19, Johnson made the trip to Las Vegas to try out. She performed for her audience at the top of her game, leading her tryout team to a 3-1 record, receiving MVP honors out of over 100 other female athletes who showed up to participate in the tryout. She was also named to the Junior National Team.

The tournament is a collection of one team from every state in the nation. In July all the teams will join together in Madison, Wis., to play out the drama of the tournament.

"I'm very excited to play and represent my school, my family and myself," Johnson said. "I thank God for my abilities."

Johnson is currently preparing for the national competition. Every Tuesday and Thursday she can be found on the Delta College basketball court practicing her dribbling, jump shot or free throw, getting ready for the tournament. She is confident she and her team will do well.

"I'm proud of her," Johnson's coach Jodi Wooton said. "It's a real honor for her to make it this far."

Johnson looks to Los Angeles Laker's star Kobe Bryant for new moves and inspiration to keep her going on the court and in life.
