If the Cleavers lived in America today, Ward would have had a mid-life crisis and run off with his secretary, June would be raising the kids by herself, Wally would be an oversexed jock because of his overbearing mother, and the Beav would be a depressed gothic who thinks no one listens to him. It used to be that every family had a mother and a father. If it was any other way, that family was seen as odd or different. Today it is the other way around. With 50 percent of all couples divorcing, it is rare to find parents who are happily married and stay together until death do they part. Bear Creek psychologist Jennifer Shirron believes that a single parent has the responsibility of providing extra care to their child. "It is especially important that a single parent provides sufficient, positive care to their child because they might feel the void of only having one parent," Shirron said. One person affected by divorce is junior Crystal Hill. Born in Oakland, Hill moved to Virginia at age10 and came back to California with her father after her parents divorced. Hill said that her parents' separation was mutual and it was not too hard on her. Her dad is very protective of her and tries to keep an eye on her at all times. "My dad and I are very close, but he is very strict," Hill said. "He will inspect my room and closet to make sure they are clean." Hill said that she had to mature at an early age because her father's business requires that he travel to the Bay Area frequently. "My dad is a private investigator so if he leaves for a few days he will come back and tell me everything that I did in the house while he was gone," Hill said. Hill still has a relationship with her mother even though she lives in Washington, DC. "I talk to my mom twice a month and we have a very close relationship," Hill said. "I tell her things that I cannot tell my father." Though Hill was able to get through the split easily, some divorces do not go as smoothly. Junior Thomas Quick had a harder time with his parents' divorce because of how badly it ended. Quick said his mother was a heavy social drinker and had two affairs before she finally filed for divorce. Quick said that before she left she spent $50,000 on her husband's credit cards, put a lien on the house and took all the belongings in the house. Fortunately, a friend of the family named Sharon Hope felt for Quick and his father so she moved in with them and helped them with the bills. "Sharon is not only a friend of the family, she is an asset to the family," Quick said. Because of the chance Quick and his father have to repair their lives, they do not feel bitter about what happened. "My father and I have a very unique relationship," Quick said. "We like to discuss politics and have adult discussions." Quick said he forgives his mother because he believes that in her mind she does not think she did anything wrong. Quick believes that the situation has made him more logical and sensible about his surroundings. Divorces are not the only way a family can be broken up. Senior Stephanie Lee lives with her mother because her father died of heart failure when she was six. Because of her father's death, Lee's mother was forced to go back to work as a bookkeeper. Lee, her mother and her sister moved to Stockton after her father's death. The incident was hard on the family for a long time. Lee said that she would tell her friends that her parents were divorced because she felt different. With her father gone, Lee had to mature quickly. She had to grow up because of the responsibilities she has taken on. "We take care of each other and watch out for each other," Lee said. "I think that I am more like my father because he was more outgoing in school," Lee said. "I also try to do well like he did." Lee had a hard time with her mother dating and says she felt like the other men were trying to take her father's place, but she did not say anything to her mother because she did not want to upset her. Lee said that she sees other kids not appreciate having two parents, divorced or not. "They should appreciate that they have a father because it is a once in a lifetime relationship," Lee said.
