Do you remember when you played elementary school sports? Were you a fiery-eyed competitor obsessed with college recruitment, or just looking for something fun to keep you busy? Students who join school-organized sports in elementary and junior high school mainly enjoy playing sports and want to have fun with their friends. These kids rarely play with their health or college education in mind. High school sports, however, are a different ball game for some individuals. While enjoying themselves is a major priority, students in high school now start to view sports as a passport to college. Scholarship is one word that lingers in the minds of those who participate in sports. Whether they consider themselves scholarship material or not, the idea of someone else paying for their college education is enticing. Senior point guard Myron Jordan, Bruin basketball's leading scorer, has a very real chance of having this dream come true. As an athlete who is excellent, if not the best, at his position, colleges from all over undoubtedly have their eyes on him. "[Basketball] is in my blood," Jordan said. "My dad played when he was in school. I'm hoping for a scholarship. I mean, who wouldn't want to have their college paid for them?" Another popular reason for participating in sports is the chance to remain active doing something fun. "[Playing soccer] gives me something better to do than just sitting around and watching TV," sophomore Robert Rice said. Remaining active is important to those who rely on sports to keep them in good health. Most games and practices involve plenty of running or movement, therefore offering a great opportunity to exercise. "Playing sports is fun and can be good exercise," freshman Laura DeGrassi said. Socialization is a big part of the whole high school experience, and sports is no exception. Many students join teams to be with their friends. Competing together towards one common goal is best done when teammates know and trust each other, and can often make friendships stronger. "I guess one of the reasons I joined track is because some friends of mine were also," DeGrassi said. There are many reasons why students participate in high school sports. The answer lies within the individual. Everyone has his own separate goals and motives. Whatever the reasons, high school sports provide a great way to keep healthy, have fun, make friends, and possibly create futures.
