The Holy Scriptures
by Joshua Lian

The Bible, literally meaning books, is a collection of Scriptural texts accepted by the Christian Church as uniquely inspired by God and thus authoritative.

Whilst Anglicans/Episcopalians recognize many differences in the way the Bible is studied and interpreted, it is accepted universally in the Anglican Communion as the primary and authoritative witness to the church's faith. Written and transcribed by many authors (led by the Spirit of God) over a period of many centuries, the Bible bears remarkable testimony to the mighty acts of God in the lives of people and nations, in the past and the future. In the Old Testament is found the vivid account of God's covenant relationship to Israel. In the New Testament is found the story of God's new covenant with all of creation in Jesus.

Hmmm... you probably know this already, right?

Some people think the Bible is just a bunch of mumbo jumbo or just a piece of ancient literature irrelevant for today. Quite on the contrary, the Bible is the ultimate guide to our faith. I mean, isn't it really cool that God personally sent us a love letter? God sent us the Bible: the driver's manual for our lives. .

In our Anglican tradition, the sixth article of the 39 Articles of Religion says this: "The Holy Scriptures containeth all things necessary to salvation". For Cranmer, the great Anglican Reformer, the Bible was a "trustbook", a book that elicited faith and true Christian doctrine. By this, Cranmer set the tone for sola scriptura in the Church of England.

In my experience, the Bible comforted me in difficult times. It helped me to realized God is there, and that he's with me.

The Bible give us hope, wisdom, and guidance. Read it! It's alive...

Here is a suggested prayer (by John Calvin) before you read the Bible:

Grant, Almighty God, that as thou shinest on us by thy word, we may not be blind at midnight, nor wilfully seek darkness, and thus lull our minds asleep: but may we be roused daily by thy words, and may we stir up ourselves more and more to fear thy name and thus present ourselves and all our pursuits, as a sacrifice to thee, that thou mayest peaceably rule, and perpetually dwell in us, until thou gatherest us to thy celestial habitation, where there is reserved for us eternal rest and glory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"People are like grass that dies away; their beauty fades as quickly as the beauty of wildflowers. The grass withers, and flowers fall away. But the word of the Lord will last forever." -1 Peter 1.24-25 NLT
