McCorkle Extends Record To Five

It was a calm, sunny day. The course was as good as Pine Hill has ever been. The frost delay quickly gave way to a warm Spring day. To the casual observer, there was nothing that should have driven the field of the 11th annual Lobsterfest to the record high scores posted. Regardless, the outcome was predictable. Thanks to superior mental conditioning, Jeff was the last man standing at the end of the day and will carry the Lobster for another year.

The CMGC Statistician reports that Jeff has won 50% of the Lobsterfests he has entered. Staggering for a club with otherwise evenly distributed victories. The USGA Handicap System has proven itself in our club by spreading tournament wins almost evenly across the entire membership. Except for the Lobsterfest, of course.

The field averaged an astounding 7 strokes over par through the final five holes. Amazingly, the carnage led to a playoff on the par 5 first hole. Jeff and Vince were tied at 149 after going +5 and +9 respectively over the final five holes. After scrambling to put shoes back on and grab clubs from trunks, Vince promptly snap hooked a drive under some trees on the left and Jeff laced one down the middle. Despite the miscue on the tee, Vince gasped to a bogey 6 forcing Jeff to two putt from 40 feet, which of course he did calmly. So close and yet so far.

The Feast was a resounding success despite a shower around 5:00 reminding us that Mother Nature is truly in charge. A warm fire, good libations, and a calming wind kept the chill at bay and allowed everyone to focus on the lobster.

The little things turned out to be truly little and I have heard good things from everyone. The food was outstanding and plentiful. It is definitely a group effort and I was proud of the way the evening went. I'm even looking forward to 2003!

Lobsterfest week is upon us and some last minute details are now available. The table at right shows the Course Handicaps for those eligible for this year's Fest. Note that the MaTER was recently modified to reflect the changing times in the lives of our members.

After a long absence, I am pleased to announce that the 2002 Lobsterfest Feast will once again be hosted by Vince and Angie. This year's Feast will begin at 5:00 pm. While a special request has been submitted to Mother Nature, in the event of rain the Feast will be moved to Sunday afternoon following the final round. Please remember to bring whatever you're drinking, your own chairs and a big knife. Please also review your food assignment.   Please notify the Lobsterfest Feast Chairman if you're not on the list!

It took some negotiation, but Mother Nature has agreed to give us dry weather for the Feast. One of the sacrafices was rain in the lobsters' homeland. If you think Central Ohio has it bad this weekend, check the forecast for North Cape, PEI.

View from the HillAfter getting shut out in 2000, Pine Hill will host this year's CMGC spring classic on May 18-19, 2002. The CMGC will occupy four consecutive tee times beginning at 7:00 am on Saturday (7:30 am on Sunday). Stretching to just over 6200 yards, Pine Hill fits the ideal model of a Lobsterfest course established at the inaugural event over a decade ago. Not too long, not too tight, open to good scores, a Lobsterfest course should be fun to play. While the course finishes with two long par 5s, most holes wind around the hill in an interesting array.

Despite fines and allogations of poaching, the 2002 lobster season is set to open May 1st. The setting of the gear will be celebrated at Tuesday's Golf Meeting (think of that when selecting your beverage). The weather has been warm this spring and ice left the north shore of PEI weeks ago. Canner shore prices are in line with past years. Attendance projections are indicating a two case fest.
