Scott Dominates Lobsterfest 2003
Alright, so the odds were mostly for fun, Scott still lapped the field en route to a eight stroke margin of victory in the 2003 Lobsterfest. His rounds of net 66 and 69 were two of only three sub-70s rounds. Split Rock was selected as a course ready to accept low scores and Steve's 78 in the practice round seemed to set the stage for a low scoring Fest. Still, the intangible mystique of the lobster held the low scorers at bay and drove the field average to just over 73 net strokes and will doubtlessly strike up a debate on the supposed inequities of the Handicap System. The fact remains that only one player excelled and the rest of the field failed to perform. Congratulations Scott!
The scoring breakdown at right reveals some interesting details. Scott's margin of victory was 8 strokes, and the rest of the field was separated by only 8 strokes. Check out the Lobsterfest tournament history part way down the Tournaments Page and note that after the first three years when the CMGC was in its infancy (and in fact called the PGC back then), all Lobsterfest wins are among only three members: Jeff (5), Scott (2) and Richard (2). Must be something in the water.
Despite a thorough shitting upon by Mother Nature, the Feast went on in grand style thanks to a quick plan change and Tom's fearless and last-minute volunteering of his Party House. The forecasts from all top sites (is meteorology really a science?) was clear skies and 10% chance of rain Saturday night, yet the day dawned dark and foreboding. A steady rain fell throughout round 1 but the Feast went merrily on in the clean, safe and dry Party House. An informal poll rated this years' Feast among the top of all time. Thanks Bud.

The 2003 Lobsterfest Feast will return to Vince and Angie's house at 3:30 pm on Saturday, May 17th. The start time has been moved up from the traditional start time of 5:00 in an attempt to get the lobster on the table before everyone freezes. While a special request has been submitted to Mother Nature, the Feast will be moved to Sunday afternoon following the final round should rain threaten on Saturday evening. Please take a minute to check out the weather in PEI where our lobsters live; it will build good karma for Feast night. Remember to bring whatever you're drinking, your own chairs and a big knife. The lobster order for 60 pounds of PEI's finest canners has been placed. Based on the attendees listed below, we will be dipping into CMGC funds to cover the short fall. Please encourage past attendees or potential club members to attend the Feast, share the experience and help us eat lobster. The official food assignments are shown below. We will have table space and a Weber grill, but power for electric griddles and crock pots will only reach so far. Please bring any necessary warming equipment your contribution will require.
Steve H: Famous Crab Dip & Crab Puffs
John K & Neil S: Chicago Special Gumbo
Jeff Mc: Deviled Eggs
Tom K: Dirty Rice
Richard J: Four pounds of Ro-Tel
Scott B: Dessert
Bob H: Something he's good at making
|
Scott K: 5 lbs. of butter in crock pot for melting
Ed H: 3 bags of Fritos Scoops
Bill J: Something he's good at making
Rick L: Veggie Tray with dip
Craig W: Pan of Brownies
Frank R: Baked Beans

The countdown feature keeps us from forgetting that the Lobsterfest is nearly upon us, but the release of the Lobsterfest Preview officially kicks off the arrival of the first CMGC major. Pine Hill was pre-selected host this year's event, but tee time conflicts prevented the course from getting the nod. Instead Split Rock will host the 2003 Lobsterfest. Stretching to 6270 yards, Split Rock fits the ideal model of a Lobsterfest course established at the inaugural event over a decade ago. Not too long, not too tight, open to good scores, a Lobsterfest course should be fun to play and open to low scores.
The table at right shows the Course Handicaps for those eligible for this year's Fest. Recall that the MaTER requires 12 rounds in the past two calendar years for Lobsterfest elligibility. This goal is well within the reach of even the most casual member.

The handicaps don't tell the real story of course. For that you need to get into the mind of each competitor. Our Club Oddsmaker has calculated the following odds for the field. Contact the Sports Book at Caeser's to place bets
Jeff 2 - 1 Wins every year..shoots 81 Sunday and only hit 3 greens in reg.
Vince 5 - 2 Handicap, handicap, handicap...even a bad round keeps him in contention.
Steve 4 - 1 Shoots 78 in the warm-up round..when he's on look out.
Base 5 - 1 Putters hot. If he keeps the Lobster out of Vince's driveway this year he could be a factor.
Kern 5 - 1 Handicap, handicap, handicap....No more whinning about distance.
Tom 7 - 1 Handicap should be lower, but lack of a good chili dog at the turn could prove fatal.
Rich 10 - 1 Excellent off the tee's but the limited # of rounds and other distractions is all she wrote.
JK 20 - 1 Moved up a notch. At least the beer will be cold.
And finally, a quote from the Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division while addressing his marines bound for home after serving in Iraq:
"When you guys get home and face an anti-war protester, look him in the eye and
shake his hand. Then, wink at his girlfriend, because she knows she's dating a pussy."
