Supposedly the party of less government, the Republicans recently pushed and approved an enormous $400 billion spending bill. Their anemic plan was to head off criticism by the liberal media and left wing. What the hell are they thinking? Don't they remember Newt's attempt at the same tactic? Don't they remember how it cost Newt his job?
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said Republicans deserved credit for fiscal responsibility and for producing a second straight balanced budget. Bullshit, Trent. There's a big difference between a balanced budget and smaller government. Balanced as it may be, this spending bill represents a huge increase in our country's confiscatory tax and spend machine. In an attempt to thwart the efforts of the left wing media to paint Republicans as child starving zealots, they betrayed their own values and the values of their constituency and caved to the liberals. Budget "cuts" are a myth. The only cuts are in the rate of increase. Where will it end?
My answer is term limits; a limit of 1 term, that is. Our Founding Fathers saw political service much like we see jury duty today. We don't have professional, career jurors. We have everyday citizens who have lives and jobs and a stake in their community. Let's take the big money out of politics and get the career politicans out of the picture. You serve your duty as an elected official and then return to your job. Speak up. Write or e-mail your congressman. At the very least, get mad and talk about it. Thank you.
