Smiling for the camera

Another year has come and gone. With the ever quickening passage of time, Myrtle Beach 2001, A Golf Oddessy seems to have flashed by in an instant. This tenth anniversary trip will be remembered as one of the finest. At the conclusion each round, the course of the day was heralded as a "favorite." Mother Nature smiled on us and delivered the best departure day weather in the trip's history. Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn't have much pull with Delta's regional air partners. Upon reflection, the cancelled flight home that sent us careening southward in a cab featuring Meatloaf or ZZ Top to catch a flight from Charleston added spice to the experience. Other than a photo of our cabbie, what more could you ask for?

Congratulations go first to Jeff for his outstanding effort and superb results. Standing strong against Do The Least You Can Do, Jeff arranged travel for many, drove every inch of the way (except when a cab driver was at the helm), securred lodging, and delivered the finest array of courses to date. Despite the many distractions, he even managed to win the tournament. On behalf of the entire CMGC, thanks Jeff.

No vegetables were eaten for five days! Each day began with a "hearty" breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, and an endless string of non-vegetables. The beach decor of The Sands' main buffet eased us into the morning. The lubrication provided by this important meal kept things moving the whole day.

A rare appearance by the photographerEvening provided a similar pattern of relaxation, cold beer and local cuisine. The nightly performance of Tom's Everyone Is A Diamond brings everyone to the Party Room for the ritual selection of the next day's pairings.

No bargains were left unturnedThough there were few purchases (Golf shoes and a practice putter by yours truly), golf shopping is always an integral part of each morning's preparation for the battle ahead. Much in the way the Golf Show returned as a retail bargain leader, Martins and Golf Dimensions provided competitive prices on everything you could need.

Man, is this refreshingWith every passing year, it becomes easier to tell where the night ends and the next day begins. John on the porch, on the phone, in his skivvies provides a vivid commentary on the aging of our group.

Sun sets on the final tee shotOpening day took us to Oyster Bay for the traditional Roommates' Tournament. The team of Vince and Scott K. was brought together by a cribbage match only ten short days earlier, but prevailed against a strong showing by Tom and Bob. Bob stormed the front 9 in 40 strokes, but the lead was finally wrested from Tom and Bob after Scott's net birdie on the island green 17th. Despite a stumble on the closing hole and Tom holing a 20 foot par putt, the underdogs prevailed and captured the oldest event on the schedule. The overall tournament leader was Bob at 74 followed Jeff (75), Scott K. (77) and Vince (78).

Tommy works one around the marshEveryone is a diamond produced two repeat teams in Vince-Scott K. and Jeff-John, though neither could muster the score needed to beat Scott. B and Bob at Marsh Harbour. Vince and Scott K. stayed close until the course returned to the marsh. The winning team stayed out of trouble and cemented the best ball win with Scott's strong pars on 17 and 18. The overall leaderboard shifted as Jeff moved into the lead at 149. Bob (152), Scott K. (157) and Scott B. (162) rounded out the first page. Since no one shot in the 80s at Oyster Bay, the only quest left was four rounds in the 90s and only Tom, Bob and Jeff remained in the hunt.

John surveys the spit of land Jack calls a greenThe practice range sounded like a Geritol commercialEveryone is a diamond did a better job of shuffling the field at Pawley's Plantation. The low handicap pair of Tom and Scott B. endured the only rain of the trip and prevailed with solid play. Tormented by diabolically tight shots like the 69 yard 13th and 140 yard 17th the course played into the low handicap's strengths. Pawley's Plantation was the third straight course that was cited as a "favorite." Jeff remained atop the overall leaderboard at 225 and Bob remained in second at 235, but John jumped two spots to claim third at 237. Tom also cracked the top four at 240. Bob's century culled the all-90s field to just Jeff and Tom.

Can you spot the gator on the distant shore? How can every Starter be from Ohio?Dawn arrives early on departure dayAlligators helped add the title of "favorite" to The Witch for a clean sweep of all four courses. Reverse seeding was used to determine the pairings for the last event. Fate placed the repeat pairing of Pawley's winners Tom and Scott B. first on the tee followed by John and Scott K. The team of Bob and Vince played with Jeff and Richard in the last group. Both Richard and Jeff shot their best rounds of the week to take the final best ball by a wide margin. Mother Nature gave us a going away present of light breezes, bright sun and nearly 80 degrees. All agreed that it was the finest departure day weather ever. Jeff retained his lead in the overall tournament and captured the Myrtle Beach 2001 title on the strength of his net 73 with a 13 over par total score of 298. Jeff was the only competitor to crack the 300 mark. John climbed into second 14 strokes back at 312. Scott B. jumped up to third at 314 and Tom rounded out the first page at net 326. Fisrt round leader Bob finished fifth at 327. Vince and Scott K. tied for sixth at 328. Richard came in at 361. Both (and only) Jeff and Tom managed all four rounds in the 90s.

Yeah, babyPayday for the Ping TeamThe Manufacturer's Title was a daily tournament within tournament. Pitting the team of Jeff and Vince playing Ping irons against the team of Tom and John playing Titleist irons, the Manufacturer's Title was a series of four total net score matches. The Ping Team took an early lead by winning the first two matches at Oyster Bay and Marsh Harbour. The Titleist Team snuck in for a win at Pawley's Plantation, but the door was closed with a solid win for Ping at The Witch. Better luck next year boys.
