3rd Annual Fall Myrtle Beach Trip: Update Archive

Update 1/Pre-departure: All the plans are laid. The departure time is 0500. FRS radios will help maintain the caravan. The destination is Condotels North. Here are some pictures of the place from Condotels' website. Stay tuned to this page for daily updates. Good luck.

Update 2/Arrival:McCorkle's Standard Pink Route was selected and although we were off the record pace, the trip was completed on schedule in 9:46. Thanks Jeff. I had planned a stop at the South Carolina border for a group photo, but one of the several rain showers kept us on the road. Good thing too, several minutes for a photo would have put us over the magic 10 hour mark. Thanks Mother Nature.

Here we are on the ocean front balcony at Emerald Cove #1, Condo 5b. The view is fabulous. After a quick stop at Greene's, Thanksgiving Dinner commenced at the Sea Fare. The food was fabulous. The mermaid was polite enough to pose for this post-feast photo.

Update 3/Day 1:Brick Landing was tougher than we remembered. The course was in fabulous condition and the weather was perfect (74F and sunny), but this flock of vultures kept following us around. Brick Landing's 132 slope rating was a stiff opening day challenge.
The jackels followed us the whole round We survived!

Angie and Paula lead Vince and Scott through 10 holes, but after adding up the scores, the men beat the women 1 up. It came down to a clutch par putt by Vince on 18 to halve Angie's new par. The good karma we picked up by driving through Pinehurst paid off. Mother Nature waited until we left the veranda to cut loose with a torrential downpour. Here's the last dry photo of the day.

Update 4/Day 2:Buoyed by clear skies and warm sun, and stinging from the harsh opening day round, we elected to warm up prior to today's round at Panther's Run. Having gotten the bad shots out of the way, we were ready to split the fairways.

Running on a gut full of Don's 24 Hour Pancake Palace, the men were tough through the first few holes. Predictably however, the girls pulled out to a commanding 4 hole lead by #8. A brief rally after the turn made it interesting. Scott's Docker blowout made it entertaining. In the end though, Angie's tricky pitch to save net par on #17 closed out the match with the girls winning 3 and 2.

Update 4/Day 3:Meadowlands is an Audobon Society CourseThe final day began with a beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic. A repeat visit to Don's for breakfast primed us for the rubber match. Scott and Vince had surged on the back nine at Brick Landing to capture the first match. Angie and Paula maintained their early lead at Panther's Run to tie the series. The final showdown was at Meadowlands Golf Club. All agreed it was the gem of the three courses.

It is worth noting that we enjoyed exceptional weather for the entire trip. The highs were in the 70s and the skies were sunny for every round. The high of 74 on Friday was a record for Myrtle Beach. I attribute the good weather to our passing through another of golf's holy lands, Pinehurst, on the way down.

Day 3 saw the tightest competition of the week. The lead went back and forth 9 times and neither side lead by more than one stroke. Tension was fierce, at least until Scott blew out his second pair of pants on the 16th green. This remarkable repeat of yesterday's split provided a distraction for the remaining holes. Scott set a new club record for the most consecutive days of blowing the ass out of his pants with 2 days, beating Bubba's previous record of 1 day.

The entire 3 day event came down to the last putt on the last hole. The match was even on the 18th tee. Vince, Scott and Angie each took 4 strokes to reach the final hole; Paula found some trouble with the lake on the left that ran the entire length of the hole. Angie was first to putt and made an aggressive run at par, leaving her a tap in 6 that was conceeded. Vince and Scott each had 30 foot putts to stay alive. Vince left his putt about 10 feet short and Scott's breezed by on the high side. Here was the scene on that final green.

As the Fall 1999 Myrtle Beach Trip draws to a close, I would like to personally thank everyone who tuned in to these "live" updates. The experience has been both exciting and rewarding. I hope that our club's website has reached a new high in entertainment and information value. I would also like to personally thank Mother Nature for providing us with such exceptional weather.

This is Vince, signing off from Myrtle Beach, Golf Capital of the World.
