Texts and Translations

In dulci jubilo

In dulci jubilo,
nun singet und seid froh.
Unsers Herzens Wonne
leit in praesepio,
und leuchet als die Sonne
matris in gremio:
Alpha es et O.
In sweet rejoicing,
now sing and be joyful.
Our heart’s delight
lies in the manger,
and shines as the sun
in his mother’s lap:
Thou art alpha and omega.

Puer natus in Bethlehem

Puer natus in Bethlehem, alleluia,
unde gaudet Jerusalem, alleluia.

Hic jacet in praesepio, alleluia,
qui regnat sine termino, alleluia.

Reges de Saba veniunt, alleluia,
aurum, thus, myrrham offerunt, alleluia.

A boy is born in Bethlehem, alleluia;
Therefore rejoice, Jerusalem, alleluia.

Here lies there in a manger, alleluia,
Who reigns without end, alleluia.

Kings from Sheba came, alleluia,
Offering gold, incense, and myrrh, alleluia.

Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra)

Quem vidistis pastores?
Dicite: annuntiate nobis in terris quis apparuit.
Natum vidimus, et choros angelorum
collaudantes Dominum.
Alleluja.

O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio:
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt
portare Dominum Christum:
Alleluja.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Jubilate Deo omnis terra,
servite Dominum in laetitia.
Introite in conspectu ejus in exultatione.
Scitote quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus;
ipse fecit nos, et non ipsi nos.

What did you see, shepherds?
Tell us: announce to us what appeared on earth.
We saw him born, and the chorus of angels
praising the Lord.
Alleluia.

O great mystery
and wondrous sacrament,
that animals should see the Lord born,
lying in a manger:
O Blessed Virgin, whose womb was worthy
to bear the Lord Christ.
Alleluia.

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Sing joyfully to God, all the earth,
serve the Lord with gladness.
Enter into his presence with rejoicing.
Know that the Lord he is God,
he himself made us, and not we ourselves.

Exultent caeli

Exultent caeli et gaudeant angeli,
jubilent omnes jubilent hodie,
canentes populi in organo laetitiae
in citharis et choris.
Nam hodie concepta es,
Beata Virgo Maria,
per quam salus mundi
credentibus apparuit.
O Maria Mater gratiae
Mater misericordiae.
Sola fuisti digna portare
talentum mundi.
Nam hodie angelus Domini
nunciavit Mariae
et concepit de Spiritu Sancto
elegit eam Deus
et preelegit eam
in tabernaculo suo habita re facit eam.
Let the heavens exult and the heavens rejoice
let all the people shout with joy today,
let the people sing with the joyful organ
with lyre and dance.
For today thou wast conceived,
O blessed Virgin Mary,
for the salvation of the world;
he has appeared to all believers.
O Mary, mother of graces,
Mother of mercies,
alone thou wast worthy to bear
the price of the world.
For today the angel of the Lord
announced to Mary
and she conceived by the Holy Spirit;
God has chosen her,
and foreknew her,
in her womb he dwelt who made her.

O magnum mysterium

O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio:
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt
portare Dominum Christum:
Alleluja.
O great mystery
and wondrous sacrament,
that animals should see the Lord born,
lying in a manger:
O Blessed Virgin, whose womb was worthy
to bear the Lord Christ.
Alleluia.

Gloria

I.
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Laudamus te, benedicimus te,
adoramus te, glorificamus te,
gratias agimus tibi
propter magnam gloriam tuam.

II.
Domine Deus, rex caelestis,
Deus Pater omnipotens.
Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe,
Domine Deus, Agnus Dei,
Filius Patris.
Qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis.
Qui tollis peccata mundi,
suscipe deprecationem nostram.
Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris,
miserere nobis.

III.
Quoniam tu solus sanctus;
tu solus Dominus;
tu solus altissimus,
Jesu Christe,
cum Sancto Spiritu
in gloria Dei Patris.
Amen.

Glory to God in the highest,
And peace to his people on earth.
We praise thee, we bless thee,
we adore thee, we glorify thee,
We give thanks to thee
for thy great glory.

Lord God, heavenly king,
God the Father Almighty.
Lord only-begotten Son Jesus Christ,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father.
Who takest away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Who takest away the sin of the world,
receive our prayer.
Who sittest at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.

For thou only art holy;
thou only art the Lord;
thou only art most high,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
