Text of Fauré Requiem

To be presented March 31, 2007, by The Concert Singers

I. Introit & Kyrie

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam,
ad te omnis caro veniet.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.

A hymn is due thee, O God, in Zion,
and to thee shall vows be paid in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer;
to thee all flesh shall come.

Kyrie, eleison.
Christe, eleison.
Kyrie, eleison.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

II. Offertory (Solo: ___, Bass)

O Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae,
libera animas [omnium fidelium] defunctorum
de poenis inferni et de profundo lacu.
[Libera eas] de ore leonis,
ne absorbeat [eas] Tartarus,
ne cadant in obscurum.
[Sed signifer sanctus Michael
repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam,
quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini ejus.]

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
Free the souls of [all] the [faithful] departed
from the pains of hell and from the abyss.
Free them from the mouth of the lion;
let [them] not be swallowed by Tartarus,
nor fall into lasting darkness.
[Instead let Michael, the holy standard-bearer,
lead them into holy light;
which once thou didst promise to Abraham and his seed.]

Hostias et preces tibi, Domine,
laudis offerimus.
Tu suscipe pro animabus illis,
quarum hodie memoriam facimus.
Fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam,
quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini ejus.

Sacrifices and prayers to thee, O Lord,
we offer, with praise.
Receive them for the souls that
we remember today.
Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death to life;
which once thou didst promise to Abraham and his seed.

III. Sanctus

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth,
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

IV. Pie Jesu (Solo: ___, Soprano)

Pie Jesu Domine,
dona eis requiem. Amen.

Merciful Lord Jesus,
grant them rest. Amen.

V. Agnus Dei & Communion

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
dona eis requiem sempiternam.

Lamb of God, who takest away the sin of the world,
grant them rest.
Lamb of God, who takest away the sin of the world,
grant them rest.
Lamb of God, who takest away the sin of the world,
grant them rest everlasting.

Lux aeterna
luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Let eternal light shine on them, O Lord,
with thy saints in eternity; for thou art merciful.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
With thy saints in eternity; for thou art merciful.

VI. Exiguiae (Solo: ___, Tenor)

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna,
in die illa tremenda;
Quando caeli movendi sunt et terra;
Dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.

Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo,
dum discussio venerit,
atque ventura ira.

Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis, et miseriae;
dies illa, dies magna et amara valde.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Free me, O Lord, from everlasting death
on that terrible day;
When heaven and earth will be shaken;
When thou wilt come to judge the world by fire.

I tremble with fear,
as the day of judgment approaches,
before the wrath that is to come.

That day is the day of wrath, calamity, and misery,
the day of great bitterness.

Eternal rest grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.

VII. Valediction

In Paradisum deducant angeli;
in tuo adventu sucipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.

Chorus angelorum te sucipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
aeternam habeas requiem.

May the angels lead thee into paradise;
may thy arrival be attended by the martyrs,
and lead thee into the holy city Jerusalem.

May the chorus of angels receive thee
with Lazarus once a beggar
into the eternal rest.
