February 2002 Log
1 Feb, Fri - 3 Feb, Sun
- Studied the App Layer for CN on Friday.
- I'm starting to find Seinfeld very addictive. The humour's so natural!
- Watched the Pink Floyd special on [V] Weekends.
- Decided to get a haircut on Sunday.
- Came back from the hair saloon (Sunday morn) and had a nice hot bath. Got sleepy and decided to take a nap. It's 2PM when I wake up!
- Got bored reading CN and setup GNOME in the evening.
4 Feb, Mon
- Woke up at around 2 AM! A result of all that sleeping on Sunday. Anyway tried to sleep but couldn't and got down to revision at 4AM.
- Landed at RV Trust at 7:15 AM, only to be told that buses leave at 8:15AM. One hour out in that cold.
- Well that CN exam was OK, the paper didn't hurt anybody except that it was long.
- Watched Snake Eyes in the noon. Good movie with some nice camerawork.
- Checked mail from COMPskis to see guys fighting over Palindrome day (2-2-2).
- Felt very tired and just crashed.
5 Feb, Tue
- Still feeling tired and so slept till 10:30 AM.
- High time I read for the exam.
6 Feb, Wed - 7 Feb, Thu
- The IP paper was pretty easy. I made a silly mistake with threads.
- RSST is celebrating it's Diamond Jubilee!
- Watched an episode of Kyon Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi with my sis at noon. In 2002 women certainly don't dress like the bahus in this soap do. The soap is so boring, I don't what the big deal about it is!
- Studying for AA exam on Thursday.
- Amogh sent scans of the CD paper. I can barely make out anything in the pics.
8 Feb, Fri
- The AA exam was real bad :-( Many things I hadn't prepared for had appeared. Atleast one of the exams has to be like this, isn't it?
- Amogh got xeroxes of the CD model papers. Thanks! There's no way I could have read the bmps he sent.
- Dopey talked a lot about music and TV programmes in the bus. Made me forget about the exam.
- Anyway, three exams are over in 5 days and the next three streched over 12 days!
- Spent the noon watching TV and sleeping trying to forget the exam.
- Read a lot of comments on the Mono project. I've liked .Net since I first saw it and it also struck me that a open environment like Linux is the right place for it.
- Galeon is a great browser! Finally here's a Linux browser I'm satisfied with. It can even save the page along with the content.
9 Feb, Sat - 12 Feb, Tue
- Studied some CD stuff on Saturday.
- Started work on a small perl script (called Stuff Tracker) to keep track of stuff (CDs, books) I've lent to others. This is inspired by a freeware My Stuff that I use in Windows. Hope I'll also learn some Perl along the way :-)
- Slept a lot on Sunday in the morning and noon. Yaaaawwwwwnnnn!
- Looked at some of the libraries in Linux. There's a library for almost everything!
- Look what arrived in the mail - Oracle magazine with Larry on the cover!
13 Feb, Wed
- Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) is performing in Bangalore on April 13! Must mention that it was Avi who introduced me to Pink Floyd. These guys created some really haunting music in their days.
- Today was the CPS exam - did not do quite well, but sorta OK :-) Left out lots of stuff.
- Gaurav's birthday was yesterday and I didn't know!
- DN has fractured his foot (hairline). Seems it happened before the ACA exam.
- Sachin (noon bus) makes some solid points on why studying abroad is not worth it. Interesting points actually ;-)
- The new telephone directories have arrived. What's new? They're now 3 volumes instead of 2. But they're looking smaller too!
- Slept a solid 3 hours at noon.
- Dad left for Karwar at 6PM.
- Lakshman drops in, why? To invite our family to his wedding ofcourse. I'm not going as usual :-)
14 Feb, Thu
- Woke up at 10! Studied CD for sometime and slept again and woke up at 3!
- Finally sat down and studied CD at night.
15 Feb, Fri
- Feeling sleepless (all that sleeping yesterday :) woke up at 3AM! Studied CD again.
- Today's exam is CD (Compiler Design). Didn't do well, made many mistakes in answering. Felt pretty devastated in the end.
- We'll be getting 11 days of holidays, college reopens March 4.
- Watched Alien 3 in the afternoon. This one is a bummer, nothing interesting.
- Saw French Kiss. Impressed (though countless Bollywood movies have used the formula since). Meg Ryan is great!
16 Feb, Sat
- Our new neighbours have moved in.
- Studied LI for sometime.
- There's a new song Drops Of Jupiter by a band called Train. Also, Creed's single My Sacrifice from their new album Weathered sounds very good.
- Saw Ishq. Very funny first half :-)
17 Feb, Sun - 19 Feb, Tue
- Studied for LI (Linux Internals) on Sunday. Now that I'm reading it the second time, all the pieces are falling into place and I'm able to understand the concepts clearly now.
- LI is tough!
20 Feb, Wed
- The exams are over!!! LI was bad, but it's over!
21 Feb, Thu
- Helped Rohith install Mandrake Linux 8.1
- Formatted C: and installed Windows 2000. Looks stable but takes a lot of time to start while the hard disc makes loud whirring sounds. It's easy to see where Windows ME got its looks from.
22 Feb, Fri - 24 Feb, Sun
- The usual routine of installing all the needed sw on Win 2K.
- Finished reading Neanderthal (by John Darnton). Quite gripping in parts. I would give it a 3/5.
25 Feb, Mon
- Saw the movie U-571. Not very good but nice timepass.
26 Feb, Tue
- OK we start working on our project today. Abhilash turns up at 9:30 sharp. We go on his bike to Amogh's place. Sai has to come at 10AM. We're watching some real gore in Saving Private Ryan when Sai saves us by turning up at 11:30AM!
- We ride to Mallya Hospital. We're given importance as soon the receptionist realises who Amogh's contact is ;-) The person on duty shows us how people are CT scanned. We see a fat woman being scanned. The software (from GE) is pretty cool.
- Later, we meet the head of this who gives us some more info on the software side of these scans.
- Amogh succeeds in persuading us to Gangarams. Seems that he saw a lot of books on medical imaging sold here sometime. But, today we can't find even one book on that subject :-) We decide we are hungry, but Abhilash refuses to come for lunch. There's nothing unusual about that! Anyway, we have some juice and return back.
- An hour of downloading info on the project at Amogh's place. We dicuss a lot about the project, how to carry it out in 3 months and such. Finally, I'm dropped off at 6PM.
- Quite an eventful day.
27 Feb, Wed
- Surprise! Madhu and Ravindra turn up at 10:30. Lots of talk about projects and college.
- Seems Madhu wants to visit this place called GreenRose Computer Services and we accompany him. The guy at that place bores us for an hour before we escape.
- We have lunch and later swap some interesting software.
- Today there's some interesting mail from COMPskis over placements in Cisco. People are flaming each other over the issue. I've not applied since I'll be using my dream option and the competition is too tough.
- Slept at around 11. Woke up after an hour and started to collect info on 3D libraries, renderers under Linux.
28 Feb, Thu
- Watched the movie Escape From Alcatraz. It's very very nail biting, keeps you on the edge. It's also a very silent movie.
