Love has no reasons (Subthemesong) -- Esther Kwan & Nick Cheung

Esther: From that day on, I have abandoned everything
To run away with you holding your hand

Nick: Together with you, it doesn’t matter how far we go
As long as it is forever

Esther: I finally understand in this world,
there is such a thing as true friend

Nick: This love is clearer than any crystal ball

Together: Until the snow grows too heavy in our hearts
It all depends on fate for our ending

*Together: Love has no rhyme or reason
The only reason you need is happiness
Once you have experience this kind of love
You will understand what we are talking about
You would wish to have this in your life too

Happiness doesn’t need any reasons
If one day, you grow old and have no strength left to run
Let me hold you tight
I will understand your feelings
What’s in my heart cannot be said out loud
Having you in my life is enough

Esther: Let my love guide your way, it’ll be brighter than any star
You are my heartbeat

Nick: My heart is locked in darkness, I turn around
To see you at the exit

Esther: It’s all because you have accepted me as your friend

Nick: Seeing you, my thoughts are no longer at war

Together: It is time for us to laugh merrily at last

Repeat *

Nick: Whenever a winter storm comes
I will block the wind for you
Esther: Even if lighting exist in a snow storm
You will be protecting me, making me forget all my wounds

Synopsis

This series is unique in that it has four of TVB’s top male stars as four leading characters.  The Legendary Four Aces stars Bobby Au Yeung, Nick Cheung, Gordon Lam, and Marco Ng.  Their female co-stars has Esther Kwan (playing twin sisters), Nadia Chan, Annie Man (formerly of ATV), and Yvonne Yung.  The story is mainly about the four scholars.  Bobby, Nick, and Gordon are the best scholars from Suchow.  Nick is from a well-off family and is the most famous out of the four (in actual history).  Nick is known for his good looks, wits, and how he can paint a picture in less time than burning an incense.  Bobby and his sister Annie are orphans.  Bobby owns a bookstore and knows a lot about different types of paint, paper, and ink.  Gordon’s grandfather was a well-known government official so Gordon tries to follow in his grandfather’s footstep and wants to be an honorable minister who will help people seek justice.  Marco is from a foreign country and can memorize things by just looking at them once.  He starts off evil as he constantly plans to make Nick and his friends’ lives miserable due to a family tragedy.  After the family misunderstanding finally clears up, Marco and the rest of the gang become great friends.

Nick falls for Esther (Chow Yeut), a secret assassin who is out looking for a map of treasures.  She belongs to this evil sect headed by a eunuch.  Annie is also in love with Nick.  In order to please both his mother and father, Nick decides to marry both Esther (the one he really wants) and Annie (whom he treats like a little sister).  When Esther wanted to get marry to Nick and wanted out of this sect, the eunuch gave her some poison and refused to let Esther leave.  Esther’s friend from the sect (who is secretly in love with her) was ordered by the eunuch to kill Nick, Bobby, and Gordon’s teacher.  He succeeds.  Esther, knowing that Nick will never forgive her for her part in the teacher’s death has no choice but to leave the man she loves.  The marriage never went through since Esther disappeared and a devastated Nick refused to marry Annie.

After this episode, the four friends leave Suchow and head for the capital city to take the civil examinations.  Nick wants to prove to everyone that he is smart enough to be a government official, Bobby wants only the money that comes with being a government official (he is very greedy), Gordon want s to follow his grandfather’s footstep, and Marco wants to regain his family honor.

Gordon meets Princess Nadia (her dad is the king’s uncle), and she falls for him but she is engaged to a Mongolian prince against her wishes.  Her father wanted the money the prince will give him for the marriage.  Nadia begs Gordon to run away with her but he refuses stating that it is not the right thing to do.  Understanding how honorable Gordon is, Nadia realizes that Gordon will not bend.  She decides to committee suicide on her wedding day.  Luckily, Bobby and the rest of the gang are able to tell Gordon in time and he rushes over to save Nadia.  Declaring his love for her, Gordon and his friends beg the Mongolian prince to end the engagement.  The prince agrees on one condition, that Gordon proves his love for Nadia by swallowing the poison.  Gordon agrees and quickly swallows it.  Nadia, also proving her love for Gordon, soon follows and also takes the rest of the poison.  Luckily, Bobby had switched the poison with something else and the two are okay.  Seeing how much Gordon and Nadia were willing to sacrifice for each other, the prince decides to bow out.  But their troubles are far from over as Nadia’s dad refuses to let them wed, the reason being that he wants to commit treason against his nephew (the useless king) and take the throne for himself.  Knowing that Gordon is too honorable, he doesn’t want Nadia to be caught in the middle.  Despite his many efforts, Gordon and Nadia ends up married since she was carrying Gordon’s child.  In the end, Nadia’s father was unable to overthrow the king and dies.

At the capital, Nick sees Esther and thought she is Chow Yuet but she is really Chow Heung, a head maid for the king’s teacher’s household.  He thought she is pretending to not know him so he lies and becomes a servant for the household.  Nick also has an alternative motive for being there.  After realizing that Esther is not Chow Yuet, he becomes friends with her and slowly falls for Chow Heung.  At first, Esther doesn’t acknowledge her love for Nick because she is afraid that he was just using her as Chow Yuet’s replacement but after a clever trick, Nick shows Esther how much she really means to him and they get together.  Unfortunately, Chow Yuet comes back and kidnaps Chow Heung and takes her place.  By the time Nick realizes the difference, it was too late, Chow Heung was thought to have drown in the ocean.  Broken-hearted, Nick becomes a womanizer and marries 7 brides.  It turns out that Esther was saved by the Tibetan prince and came back in time to see Nick marrying all these women.  Upset, she sets herself to be the last bride, when Nick sees her, he is overcome by joy but she slaps him on the face.  After hearing Nick’s explanation, Esther forgives him and they get back together.

Bobby pines for his ex-girlfriend who married someone else.  He accidentally bumped into her one day on the street and helps her out of her financial troubles caused by her gambling husband by selling his beloved bookstore.  He goes to the capital to take the civic exam in hopes of becoming rich.  There, he meets Yvonne.  Yvonne is Chow Heung’s friend and is a cook at the same household.  Yvonne has lost her taste buds due to a breakup and asks for Bobby’s help.  Because he needs to get inside the household to steal something, he agrees.  They become friends.  But Bobby bumps into his ex again and again, agrees to help her out financially.  Bobby has nothing else to sell so he asks his friends for money but nobody has any except for Yvonne.  She lends him the money but later finds out that Bobby’s ex is actually a fraud.  Her husband is not the gambler in the family, she is the one who racked up all the financial trouble.  When Bobby finds out the truth, he was devastated.  Yvonne helps him get back on his feet and she falls for him.  But Bobby swears off women and only treats her as his good friend.  The king decides that these two should marry.  The two marries but Bobby is not in love with Yvonne.
