Synopsis This 50 episodes series stars Gordon Lam, Kenix Kwok, Nicola Cheung, Benny Chan, Michelle Yip, Ha Yu, and Mei Suet. A refreshing plot that talks about society, responsibilities, love, friendship, brotherhood/sisterhood, and most importantly, LIFE. Gordon is the main character and the story mainly revolves around him. Nicola, Benny, and him grew up at an orphanage. Gordon is an electrician, Nicola works as a TV reporter, and Benny as a slacker who does nothing but sleep. Gordon’s motto for life is that he has to be a match, lighting those around him so he always helps those who need it. In the mornings, he would ride his bike and deliver breakfast to the homeless. Benny’s father (Ha Yu) abandon him at a young age cause he was sent to jail in the Philippines. Benny resents him for that so he does his best to piss his father off. But Ha Yu really loves Benny and regrets the fact that he wasn’t there for Benny. He blames himself for the way Benny has turn out so he tries hard to make Benny forgive him. Benny later does when Ha Yu takes the rap for Benny and ends up in jail. With the help of Gordon, Benny realizes how much Ha Yu has sacrificed for him and vows to become a better son. Nicola gets adopted by this doctor’s family and lives a pretty decent life. Like Gordon, she is cheerful and optimistic. Soon into the series, she realizes that she is in love with Gordon but knows that he only treats her like a sister. She keeps her love for him hidden and eventually moves on to someone else. Later, she and Benny end up together. Nicola’s life is shatter by Kenix when Kenix reveals that her adopted father was the one that killed her birth mother when he was her doctor (something to do with surgery gone wrong). Gordon helps Nicola see the truth; that her adopted father loves her and treated her with nothing but kindness and that there are no facts pointing that he did indeed killed her mother. It could have been a freak of nature that the surgery has gone wrong. Nicola forgives her father and becomes part of the family again. Gordon thought he found his birth mother when he saw a picture of his dad and Mei Suet holding him. At first Mei Suet denied it but when Gordon rescues her, she accepted him as her son. Gordon falls for Michelle and they get together after Gordon talks her out of marrying her cousin at the alter. Gordon meets a fellow biker one morning named Ken. They become good friends. Michelle goes to work for Ken’s company and feelings between them develop. She leaves Gordon for Ken. Gordon was devastated but hides it all inside. Turns out that Ken is really Michelle’s son and that Gordon is the son of Michelle’s good friend. Second half of the show focuses on Kenix’s character, “Spider Girl”. Her older sister (also played by Kenix) is dying of liver cancer (an inherit disease) and Kenix becomes part of Gordon’s world after taking a bet with her sister. Her sister claims that Gordon is a good person while Kenix claims that he is not and will prove it. Kenix sees the bad in everyone and thinks that people do kind charitable things because they have an ulterior motive. The older sister is afraid that Kenix will be alone for the rest of life living that way so she devised this bet, hoping that Gordon can change her. Of course, Kenix starts falling for Gordon and her sister dies (this part is really sad). We also discover why Kenix is so mean to her parents. Her father died and her mom remarried. The stepfather is not a nice guy and raped (attempted rape?) the older sister so the two sisters ran away from home. Instead of defending her kids and taking them away from an abusive home, the mother decides to stay with the stepfather so Kenix hates her for that. Maybe opposites do attract since Gordon begins to fall for Kenix too. Throughout this whole process, Gordon was there for Kenix and they finally get together. Then Michelle comes back to Gordon’s life after Ken dumps her and she is left pregnant. She finds Kenix’s older sister’s diary and assumes that Gordon is with Kenix because of the older sister and that it’s just another one of Gordon’s responsibility. Michelle confronts Kenix and they had a big argument. The next day (?), Kenix shows up at Gordon’s office and put sleeping pills in Michelle’s milk. Gordon finds out about it and breaks things off with Kenix. He leaves for China to help set up a school there while Michelle discovers that Kenix has the same liver cancer as her sister. Michelle tells the gang that the sleeping pills in milk were just a trick so that Kenix can force Gordon to leave her. Kenix doesn’t want Gordon to be there to see her die. Michelle calls Gordon only to find out that he is missing. A determined Kenix leaves for China with Nicola and Benny to find him. In China, Kenix finds out that Gordon already knows about her sickness and that he went to China to find her a donor. Kenix heads up the mountain despite her illness to find Gordon. Kenix gets a vision and sees where he is and finds him. Gordon survives with only a broken leg and they get back together. Kenix finally discovers what “beautiful life” really means. Back in Hong Kong, Gordon gets words that they’ve found a donor and Kenix heads to surgery. Kenix patch things up with her mom and Gordon promises to be the first one she sees out of surgery. But when Kenix wakes up, Gordon is no where to be found and the whole family appears uncomfortable. Turns out, Gordon is the donor and something went wrong in surgery and the wound had an infection that left him in a coma. Three months past, Benny and Nicola are dating. Ha Yu and Mei Suet are together. Michelle is willing to give Ken another chance. And Kenix has taken over Gordon’s responsibilities. At the hospital, Kenix panics when she sees Gordon’s bed is empty thinking that he died. Gordon surprises her at the door and tears of sadness become tears of joy. ~The End~ Overall, this series is not bad. The beginning dragged a little but if you stick it through and wait till Kenix shows up, then it’s all worth it. Again, Kenix plays dual roles as sisters. Why? Maybe TVB realized the fact that Kenix can play two extreme characters effectively (ATE) so they want to use the same formula again. The older sister’s voice is dubbed by someone else because I guess TVB didn’t want them to sound completely the same since they’re not supposed to be twins. Gordon fits his character and I can’t think of anyone (maybe Roger Kwok) who can make this type of role believable. It’s nice to see veterans Mei Suet and Ha Yu in a series after a long absence. Mei Suet has kept up with her looks cause she does not look old enough to be Gordon’s mom! Benny is good with the goofy roles but when it comes to dramatic moments, he needs more practice. Nicola’s role does not require any tough acting skills so I can’t really judge. Two characters I can’t stand are Michelle and Ken. Especially Ken! What a spoiled brat! And Michelle is so needy! They deserve to be with each other. In the end, the person that steals the show is Kenix so I hope that TVB gives her more opportunities to portray different roles. Rating: $$$ |
