**Chapter 9: Back Home**

He couldn't figure out what had gone wrong. Michelle had always sounded happy when she talked to him, and she never gave him a reason to doubt that she wouldn't be there when he returned. Why hadn't she shown up? Did she forget their arrangement?

'I'll never forget you Justin..' she had said. Was it a lie? All those times they talked on the phone, all they had shared, had she just been playing him? Justin shook his head. He just couldn't figure it out. He had been played before, but the pain had never felt like this.

He hadn't heard from Michelle in over a week before the tour ended, and she didn't call him after he went back home. He expected to hear his phone ring, and he'd pick it up and he would hear her sweet voice: 'Sorry I missed our date. I was sick.' or 'Justin, I'm SO sorry. My car broke down!' but the phone never rang. Each day went by and Justin sat in his house, alone, trying to put the pieces together in his head. They just never fit. He didn't feel like going out.. sometimes one of the guys, usually Chris or Joey, called him up and wanted to go clubbing, but Justin wasn't in the mood.

**************************

The doorbell rang. Justin begrudgingly got up off the couch and went to answer it. "Hi Chris. Oh, Shi?"

Chris beamed, and the girl next to him smiled as well, "Yup. She's here to visit me! Isn't that great?"

Justin forced a half-smile and let them in. "Yeah," Shi continued, "I convinced my family to take our winter vacation in Disney World and I thought I'd suprise him.." She poked Chris in the tummy and he doubled over giggling.

"Do either of you want something to eat or drink?" Justin tried to be a good host, although he wasn't at all in the mood for visitors.

"Nah buddy," Chris said crashing down on the couch, putting his arms around Shi's waist and pulling her down with him. "We're fine. Aren't we?"

"Yeah, I'm perfect," Shi smiled.

"Yes you are," Chris said, and he rubbed his nose against hers, making her giggle.

Justin remained silent. He felt a pang of jealousy looking at the happy couple. Why couldn't he have a happy ending as well? It was supposed to be this way for him and Michelle. What had gone wrong?

Chris looked at his distraught friend, "What's up J? Why are you so down?"

"It's nothing," Justin lied.

"I thought you were gonna be away for a few days. Why are you home so early?"

"I said it's nothing Chris," Justin said firmly.

"Don't lie to me J. I know you. What happened?"

"She didn't show up, ok?!" Justin spat out, frustrated. "I went there, and I waited and waited and waited. And she never showed up."

Chris felt bad for bringing it up, it was obviously a touchy subject. Shi was curious. "Who didn't show up?"

Chris looked at Justin for permission. Justin just nodded slightly. Chris tried to explain, "Justin met this girl, Michelle, at one of the stops on our tour show, and they promised to meet again December 3rd, the day after the tour show ended... J, I'm sorry man, I didn't know what happened."

Justin shrugged. Shi was still confused, "So you went and waited for her and she didn't show?" He nodded. "Why didn't you call her? Or go to her house?"

"I don't know her number, or where she lives.. God.. I don't even know her last name.. She was the one to always call me. Although she stopped calling a week before the tour ended."

"Well, don't worry J. She probably just figured that she couldn't compete with Britney."

The room was silent and then all the sudden Justin's head shot up and he looked directly at Shi, "What did you just say?"

Shi got extremely nervous when both boys were staring at her strangely, "I.. I said she probably just figured that she couldn't compete with Britney.."

"Shi, I'm not dating Britney. You know that. The press just makes that stuff up," Justin said bluntly.

"Yeah, I knew that. But then I saw Britney on TV and she said that you guys.." Shi stopped talking when she saw Justin's face.

"What did Britney say?" Justin demanded.

"I don't think it's my place to tell you Justin. Maybe you should call Brit-"

"Just tell me what she said Shi!"

"Well.. she said you were dating now.. and that you've known each other since MMC, but everyone knows that. And that when you're together, and I quote, 'It's like we're the only two people in the world. I wouldn't give that up for anything.' End quote."

Shi was cautious about how she worded her sentences. Justin looked as though he would explode at a moment's notice. "So... Justin.. are you telling me you have no idea that you're dating Britney?"

"I have to find her," Justin jumped up from the couch.

Shi stood and Chris jumped up as well. Justin ran around the house and grabbed his cell phone and car keys and a jacket. Chris followed him, "Find who? Britney?"

Justin spun around. "No! Michelle of course! I have to tell her it's not true! I have to find her!! She must feel so hurt.. I can't believe this. I've probably hurt her so badly.. I'll bet that's why she stopped calling, and why she didn't show up."

Then he remembered their promise, "Oh God! She thought I had found someone else! That I had moved on! She KNEW I wouldn't be there.. that's why she didn't show up! She must think I played her.. she must hate me.. oh if she only knew.." Justin kept rambling as he gathered everything he needed and stuffed it into a North Carolina duffel bag and threw it over his shoulder.

He pushed his guests out the door and locked it behind him. "Thanks Chris, thanks Shi. You don't know how much I want to kiss you right now!"

"Hey, keep your hands off my girl!" Chris joked, "And keep those lips away from ME as well!"

Justin laughed as he jumped into his car. Chris chased down the driveway after him as Justin pulled out. "Just how do you plan on finding her?!" He called out.

Justin rolled down his window, "I don't know, the same way I found her the first time!"

"How was that?" Chris said, panting as he reached the car.

"Fate..." Justin smiled, and then he pulled away.

**Chapter 10: Fate?**

Finding Michelle had not been as easy as Justin had originally thought.. He had assumed that if he wanted to find her bad enough, and he wished to see her hard enough, that fate would take it out of his hands and it would happen on its own. He was sure that it was destiny.. and at any second he would walk through a door, or turn a corner, and she would be there. He must've pictured it happening in his mind a million times over in a million different ways, but the situation never turned out to be the ending he wanted. Two days had passed and he still was no closer to finding her than if he had never left his house in Orlando.

Originally he had gone to the McDonalds and asked everyone there if they knew a 16 year old Michelle or Samantha. No one knew where they lived or what school they went to. Justin had driven up and down the streets for hours, hoping to see her walking from school, or see Samantha's car.. although he wasn't sure he would recognize it, since he didn't pay much attention to it when Samantha had followed them to the hotel.

Things got worse when people began to recognize him. He knew the most likely people to know Michelle would be other teenage girls, but he couldn't exactly walk up to one and say "Hi." Justin knew it wouldn't be much longer until the press discovered his whereabouts and THEN it would be chaos.

On the third day, Justin was sitting on a park bench falling deeper into despair as the people walked by. Time was running out for him to find Michelle before he would be forced to leave the city and return home.

A light show had been set up in the park for the holiday season, and small children tugged on their parents hands pointing out the shapes of elves and reindeer made from the twinkling lights, smiling in wonder. Christmas music played lightly through the air, and a steady stream of snowflakes continually floated to the ground. As Justin watched, he wondered if he would ever have a normal, happy family like those passing by.. Then he thought about his family back home, and how he should be spending this precious time off with them, instead of sitting alone in an unknown park.

Just then Justin's cell phone rang and he jumped to answer it, "Hello?!"

"Hey J, it's me."

"Hey JC," Justin said, dissapointed.

"So I guess you haven't found her yet?"

"No, not yet.. Hey! How do you know about it?"

"Chris, of course. Are you trying to say you weren't going to tell me?" JC teased.

"Of course, but I guess Chris's big mouth beat me to it. Actually, I was hoping to suprise everyone by just bringing her home with me.." Justin trailed off.

"Well, that's why I called. I can help."

"What? How?!" Justin jumped to his feet and a few of the people passing by jumped at the tone and strength of his voice.

JC smiled at the other end of the line, "Well you know that girl that was with Michelle?"

"Samantha? What about her? Tell me JC!" Justin felt as though he was going to burst.

"Ok! Jeez. Well, at the party, while she was talking with us, you were with Michelle, at one point Bobbie left to get a drink, and she slipped me her phone number and told me to call her if I 'ever came to my senses'," JC laughed. "We laughed it off at the time, and I didn't think of it until now, but I just found it in my pocket this morning when I was doing my laundry."

"JC, I love you." Justin's smile beamed.

"Woah buddy, tell it to the girl, not me," JC laughed.

JC gave him the number, and as soon as he had recited the last digit, Justin hung up the phone without saying goodbye and immediately started dialing Samantha.

He held his breath until he heard a female voice on the other line, "Hello?"

"Ok, before I tell you who this is, promise me you won't hang up."

Samantha was startled and confused. The masculine voice on the line sounded extremely familiar, but she couldn't place who it belonged to. "Um.. ok."

"Promise me," the voice repeated.

"I promise. Who are you?" Samantha urged.

"This is Justin," he breathed.

"Justin who?"

Justin flinched, and waited silently a few seconds instead of responding.

Samantha waited, and then her eyes grew large as something in her mind clicked into place, "J-J-Justin?!? Oh my GOD!!"

Justin held the phone away from his ear until she calmed down. "How did you get my number?" she demanded, "You know I should just hang up right now, you have NO idea how much you hurt my best friend.."

"Hey, you promised. And yes I DO know, but I can explain. JC gave me your number."

"He still has it?" Samantha's smile was huge. "Is he still with Bobbie?"

"Yes, he's still dating her. He just found it in his pocket doing his laundry.."

"Oh..." Samantha's smile faded.

"I need to talk to Michelle."

"She doesn't want to see or talk to you ever again," Samantha said flatly. "I won't tell you where she lives."

"Please Samantha. It's all a big misunderstanding. You have to let me talk to her, she has to let me explain. I know I've hurt her, and you have NO idea how it felt for me to sit at that restaurant for hours.. just waiting and waiting.. and not having her show up.."

"You were there?!" Samantha gasped.

"Until it closed," Justin said solemnly.

"I knew it! I just knew it.. I tried to tell her." Samantha was stunned. She didn't know who to trust. Justin had crushed her best friend and lied to her, yet he had still shown up and waited for her for hours, and now he was trying to find her again and apologize.

"Please Samantha. I know I can make it right. Don't make me go back to Orlando without seeing her again," Justin pleaded, his voice edged with pain. "I can't.. please.."

Samantha bit her bottom lip, and her eyes almost brimmed over with tears at the tone of sadness in his voice. "I.. I don't think she'll talk to you, even if you show up on her front door. She gave you her heart and she thinks you just tossed it aside like it was nothing.."

"I have to try," Justin said just above a whisper. "I'll never forgive myself if I don't at least try.." his voice caught in his throat.

"Ok, but just remember that I warned you.."

Justin nodded, even though he knew she couldn't see it. He wrote down the address and directions Samantha gave him and thanked her before hanging up.

He wanted to jump up from the bench and run from the park to Michelle's front door, but he wasn't sure as to what he would say. All he knew is that he wanted to hear her say his name again, have her say 'I forgive you.', hold her in his arms again, make their pain of the past few months dissapear, and promise to make sure they never feel that kind of pain again. There had to be a way to get back into her heart. Justin hoped and prayed that Michelle would let him, because if she didn't, Justin wasn't sure that he would ever be able to open his heart to another.

**Chapter 11: Finale**
Lyrics to "I Thought She Knew" not written by me.

Justin wrung his hands together and bit his bottom lip nervously as he walked across the street from his car to Michelle's house. For hours he had sat on the bench in the park, trying to plan out exactly what he was going to say to get Michelle to forgive him, but nothing he thought of seemed right, and he showed up at her door still unsure of what he would say once they were face-to-face.

It was 9 pm. Justin hoped she would still be awake. What if her father answered the door? Was Justin ready to face him? What if Michelle answered the door and slammed it in his face? What would he do then? A thousand possiblities flew through Justin's mind, none of them ending happily, as he stood motionless on her front step.

A few lights were on inside the house, and Justin could hear a TV blaring away in one of the back rooms. For a few silent moments he stared at the doorbell and tried to force himself to ring it.. but he couldn't bring up the courage within himself to do it.

Defeated, he turned and started back towards his car. His feet trodded heavily and the snow crunched beneath him.

Just then a light flickered on in an upstairs window casting it's glow onto the bright white blanket of snow on the lawn below. Justin turned and looked hopefully at the illuminated room. There he saw a slim figure casually walk by, slightly ruffling the curtains as they passed.

Michelle had changed into her pajamas and was just settling down into her bed to read a few chapters of a book before she went to sleep.

Justin realized this was his only chance, and that he had to seize the moment, grasp it, before it slipped away. As he saw Michelle pass by the window, he immediately knew what had to be done. Justin took a deep breath, swallowed hard, found the courage in his voice that he needed, and softly he began to sing. He didn't even have to think of the words to express what needed to be said, they were already written for him:

"She was my once in a lifetime.. happy ending come true. Oh, I guess I should have told her.. I thought she knew."

Michelle's room was silent as she read. At first, Justin's voice was so quiet that Michelle passed the sound off as a soft winter wind, without thinking twice about it, as she continued in her book.

"She said I took her for granted. That's the last thing I would do. Oh, I'll never understand it.. I thought she knew."

She slowly set down her book as she noted the presence of music being played somewhere nearby. She checked her radio alarm clock, and then her CD player on her desk. They were both silent and turned off. She pulled open the door and peeked her head into the hallway. Her father was watching a late night tv show, but it definetly wasn't the source. She closed her bedroom door again, leaned her back against it, and closed her eyes, trying to place the song.

"I thought she knew my world revolved around her, my love-light burned for her alone.. but she couldn't see the flame, only myself to blame.. I should have known.. I should have known.."

Since the last time she had spoken to Justin, he had haunted her thoughts and her dreams.. no matter how hard she had tried, how hard she wanted him to dissapear forever, she had never been able to force him from her heart. Now she was hearing his voice. Michelle squeezed her eyes tightly shut and tried to make it stop. *It's all in my mind! Why won't it go away? Please make it go away..* Tears filled the corners of her eyes as the melody continued, and slowly her eyes opened and came to rest on her bedroom window.

It was then that she realized the voice was not in her head, it was coming from outside. She cautiously walked across her bedroom, pulled back the curtains, lifted the window, and gasped, as she saw Justin singing below:

"She was my once in a lifetime.. happy ending come true. Oh, I guess I should have told her.. I thought she knew.. I thought she knew.."

By the time Justin had finished his last note, they were both in tears. A wintery wind blew against him and sent shivers up and down his back. He looked up at Michelle hopefully, waiting for her to say something.. anything.

"Justin.. I..." Michelle choked out. The way he looked at her made her heart melt. "I'll be right down."

She flew from the window and down to the front door, where she found Justin waiting. She stepped outside, where they could talk privately, ignored the cold, and softly shut the door behind her.

"How did you.. What are you.. Who.. Why are you here?" Michelle blurted out, as she wiped away the tracks of her tears from her cheeks.

"I had to find you again.. I had to apologize.. Michelle, you don't know what I've been going through this past month without you.."

Michelle's pain was instantly replaced by anger. "I don't know what YOU have been going through?!"

"Wait," Justin took her hand, "let me explain first.."

Michelle felt her heart leap at his gentle touch, a feeling that she was sure had been lost forever. The shock from it forced her to nod silently.

"JC had Samantha's number and she helped me find you. I know why you're angry, and why you didn't show up on December third. I know what you saw, and I'm here to tell you it's not true. I'm not dating Britney.. Please believe me, this whole time.. it's been only you, always."

Justin stopped for a few seconds to let his words sink in, but Michelle's expression didn't change. He continued, "Britney and I are old friends, you know that. When we're in the same town or whatever, we usually go out to the movies or the mall or something. When there are award shows it's usually convinient for us to go together.. since we're good friends and both big in the music world right now. But I was never 'dating' her. The way Brit feels about me, and the way I feel about her are.. very different... I'm pretty sure she thinks she's in love, and at one point in time I thought I loved her, but recently I realized that it wasn't 'that' kind of love I felt for her after all. Do you know what made me realize that Michelle?"

She shook her head.

"Because I never felt with her the way I feel when I'm with you."

Michelle swallowed hard. "How.. do you feel.. with me?" His eyes told her everything she needed to know, but something inside her told her she needed to hear him say it.

His deep blue eyes burned deeply into hers, and he whispered, "I love you Michelle."

Michelle's eyes watered and her bottom lip trembled, "I love you Justin. Even when I try not to, I can't help it." She threw her arms around his neck, and cried onto his shoulder.

He wrapped his arms around her tightly. "I was there Michelle.. on December third. I waited for you till the restaurant closed, and you never showed up. I was heartbroken. I thought you had found someone else, or forgotten about me.."

Michelle pulled back and looked him straight into his deep blue eyes, "I'm so sorry. I was so sure you wouldn't be there. I was heartbroken as well, and going there.. and waiting.. it was just more pain, I couldn't bear it. But I could never forget about you, Justin Timberlake. Believe me, after Britney said those things, I tried.. a million times, but I don't think you ever left my heart."

"You never left mine either. I almost gave up hope, but I knew I had to find you again.. I knew you were the only one for me."

Justin's smile brightened, "Are you on winter break yet?"

Michelle looked suprised, "My last day of classes is tomorrow.. why?"

Justin took both her hands in his own and looked at her with a serious expression, "Michelle, will you come to Orlando with me tomorrow?"

"Justin, I'll go anywhere with you," Michelle smiled.

A lazy grin spread across his face, "I was hoping you'd say that.." He wrapped his arms around Michelle, lifted her up and spun her around once before setting her down again lightly on her feet. Then he slowly leaned down and kissed her. A kiss so full of hope that it made all of the longing and despair of the past few weeks dissapear, a kiss that assured them both that they would never feel that way again, and once again, like on the first night they had met.. in all the world, it was only Justin and Michelle.

After the kiss was broken, Justin gazed down at Michelle and brushed a last stray tear from her cheek, "Exactly as I imagined it.. just perfect."

Michelle smiled, "A fan's dream come true.."
