Grading and Homework

Perhaps one of the hardest things about the transition from elementary school to middle school is adjusting to new homework and grading policies.  Earning A's is no easy task.  Children must learn to accept responsibility for completing homework assignments, studying for tests, and preparing projects.

You can expect your child to have approximately one hour of homework a night.  On the Bears team, each teacher has the right to give homework on any given day but in order to balance the workload for your children, we limit major assignments to the following days:

Mondays and Wednesdays:  Social Studies and Language Arts
Tuesdays and Thursdays:  Math and Science

This should help us to avoid giving too much homework on any given night.

We will attempt to post daily homework assignments and a description of all major projects here on our web page.  That way, you will always know what your child is working on.  We cannot guarantee, however, that homework will be posted every single day.  Teachers often get caught in parent conferences or meetings, preventing them from updating the website.

Students should have a homework agenda that they will fill out at the beginning of each class period.  This agenda will record all assignments for the day.  If you are interested in what your child is working on, this agenda would be a great place to check.

In middle school, the following grading scale is followed:

A=93-100
B=85-92
C=77-84
D=70-76
F=69 and lower.

There are no "+" or "-" grades in middle school.

Each teacher has personal standards for weighting grades.  Generally, tests and projects are worth more than homework.  This information will be sent home to you by individual teachers.

An almost constant struggle for you as a parent is knowing how your child is performing throughout the course of a quarter.  To help you with this challenge, the Bears Team sends home a Weekly Grade Log on Thursdays.  This grade log will list all grades earned during the course of the current week.  We ask you to sign these logs so that we know you have seen them.  They are an invaluable resource for concerned parents!
