I Heart Hiroshima
A three letter word for candy (EP)
Valve

Rating: 67%

Another day, another shiny, shiny hyped new thing outta BrisVegas – at the moment, the cities of Brisbane and Perth are alive with the sound of music. I Heart Hiroshima follow on from the likes of the Grates and Sekiden to deliver clever indie pop.

Sure, there’s still a distinctly American accent to the tones of vocalists Susie Patten and Matthew Somers, but what’s good about A three letter word for candy is that it’s clear that I Heart Hiroshima have the songs. Opener “London in Love” is a clever little number, but “It’s a Crime” is better still, with Somers taking centre stage.

The influence of Sonic Youth as filtered through Yeah Yeah Yeahs is there for all to hear on “I Feel It”, while “Bubblegum Gun” is exactly that – a pop confection with a dangerous undercurrent. I heart Hiroshima aren’t the full package yet (at this stage they’re too much a sum of their influences), but they most certainly have the potential for so much more.
