Mark these
words: Angus and Julia Stone are going to be sibling
duo that are going to matter more than most. Angus
and Julia Stone are young, but as their debut EP Chocolates & Cigarettes proves,
they know a thing or two about writing memorable
songs.
That’s the thing that most strikes about this debut
effort – there’s not a single flat spot. Normally
you can expect a group’s first release to have at
least one flat spot. Not so on Chocolates & Cigarettes.
Radio single “Paper Aeroplane” is so good that most
acts would lead it as the opening track…on this debut
EP, it comes in fourth, leaving the jaunty “Private
Lawns” to open proceedings with it’s light yet rhythmic
style.
It helps that Julia’s and Angus’ voices are both
so varying – Julia has a different style of singing
to most, phrasing her words in strange manners, more
like Beth Gibbons from Portishead than anyone else.
Angus is more in keeping with a rootsy style, but
never ‘easy listening’ like Jack Johnson. Thus “Mango
Tree” has a very different feel to Julia’s amazing “All
of Me”, while “Babylon” is given a wonderful cello
accompaniment. What’s most striking about this debut
EP is just how timeless it is – songs this good could
come from any era and still sound amazing.
