As one half
of Outkast, Big Boi doesn’t need to busy himself
with anything else at the moment other than focussing
on the follow-up to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,
THE hip-hop record of the last decade (Kanye, eat
yer heart out).
Yet, busying himself with a mix project he is: Got
Purp? Vol. II is the sequel to the mix tape Got
Purp? by DJ Drama and the Aphilliates, and
likewise it features a selection of Big Boi affiliates – from
old hands like Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown to
newcomers like Scar and Janelle Monáe, the latter
of whom marks her recorded debut on Got Purp?
Vol. II.
“Kryptonite (I’m On It)” features a full spectrum – Big
Boi himself, Killer Mike, BlackOwned C-Bone and Rock
D – and is built of a delicious loop from producers
the Beat Bullies. It’s a clear standout on Got
Purp? Vol. II, principally because the release
features far too many interludes scattered throughout
as well as an intro and an outro in its whopping
twenty-seven track listing.
The release closes with a series of previews that
may or may not come from Idlewild, the forthcoming
Oktkast soundtrack to their album of the same name.
It doesn’t sound like the duo though – the third
features references to Dungeon Family, the loose
collective of Atlanta artists of which Outkast is
a member.
