Röyksopp don’t
come across as a particularly ‘live’ act on their
albums, so the Night Out Live EP is a bit
of a revelation – with eight tracks and an outro
lasting nigh on forty minutes, it’s about what
you’d expect from one of their many festival performances.
Of course, many of the tracks that appear on Night
Out Live sound nothing like their recorded
versions. “Poor Leno”, for example, is barely recognisable;
nor is “Only This Moment”. It’s because of this
that dance music is sometimes looked down upon
by the rock pigs: they simply cannot recreate live
what they do in the studio.
But that’s hardly the point, is
it? On Night
Out Live Röyksopp reinvent their sound rather
than deliver a facsimile version of it. Recorded
live in Oslo in November of 2005, the rapturous
hometown reception is clear to hear, and heartening
too. Whilst nothing about the group is a reinvention
of the wheel, it’s clear to hear that people genuinely
seem to dig it.
