Originally from
Melbourne, it’s since transplanting to Sydney that
co-guitarists and dual vocalists Sacha Lucashenko
and Martin B. Sleeman and drummer Anton Jakovljevic
have really found their niche; all of a sudden
the band seem to be about to become a simply superb
guitar-drenched outfit.
But, before that can happen, the
band have compiled their two self-titled EPs, jumbled
the track order,
and added a fantastic new single (the title cut). “Shadows
Evolve” is immediate, and brilliantly deliciously
fuzzy guitar rock. While “Hi-Skies” may display elements
of a Nirvana-like chorus, it’s the likes of “Shadows
Evolve” and “Fall Before Walking” that best exemplify
where the morning after girls are coming from., with
dreamscape guitars adding to strong grooves.
Ride’s Mark Gardener guests on vocals on that latter
tracks, while the six minute drift of opener “Chasing
Us Under” finds Sacha murmuring his way through a
series of drifts of guitar passages that owe as much
to Spiritualized and Spaceman 3 as they do the Brian
Jonestown Massacre. For yes, the haunt of my bloody
valentine and to a lesser extent the Jesus and Mary
Chain on “Always Mine” is all over the Morning After
Girls…and that’s a mighty fine thing indeed.
The sound of Shadows Evolve is
occasionally too loose for its own good, but promising
recent
live displays on the back of American and UK tours
indicate that the Morning After Girls have tightened
their sound up remarkably, with the likes of “Run
For Our Lives” now coming out like the pop anthems
they threaten to become on this album. Album? Oh,
yes, this is an album. It feels like a complete product,
and is a fine beginning for the band. You get the
sense that the band’s ‘sophomore’ effort is going
to be a ripper.
