I [Love] Space
Sinful Sounds From a Vintage City (EP)
Reverberation

More and more bands are using soundtracking the advertisements for teen television dramas like The O.C. to their advantage – but most are big names like Evermore and Youth Group (who also appeared on the show). Sydney’s I [Love] Space are a bit different.

For starters, the band hadn’t even released “Birds. Attack” when it started being used on Channel 10’s advertisements. With a line-up shuffle in their ranks, it’s taken until now for it appear as the closing track on the band’s debut EP release Sinful Sounds From a Vintage City. What’s clear from this debut is that the one thing I [Love] Space do have going in their favour is plenty of pretty guitars – the six tracks on offer here are full of them.

The biggest problem is that apart from the saxophone-infused “In Limousine Windows” and the particularly strong “The Kill” the hooks aren’t quite strong enough; too much is given over to creating a feeling rather than nailing a tune. This is particularly true of “Drop”, which goes nowhere for nigh on five minutes. I [Love] Space are at their best when they’re developing strong choruses into memorable songs, rather than trying too hard to create atmosphere and space, as they do on “In Limousine Windows”, “The Kill” and the first half of “Birds. Attack” (before it goes off the rails into guitar interludes) in particular.
