The rumours
are swirling that the jig is up for Eminem – he’s
giving up his rapping career for one in production
(still just a rumour at this stage), he’s addicted
to painkillers and is entering hospital to try
and kick ‘em (true, it would seem), he’s died,
fat and bloated, on the toilet with a cheeseburger
in his hand. No, wait, that last one’s Elvis.
So perhaps The Anger Management Tour live
concert DVD release, recorded in 2004, will be the
defining and closing statement on the Eminem phenomenon.
The crowd goes absolutely bananas, and Eminem’s flow
is nothing short of amazing – that he has been able
to do this live for so many years now is testament
to his sheer application.
That said, it’s not too surprising that he’s burnt
out – spitting out his rhymes every night for months
on end must be absolutely exhausting. His fury, anger,
and sheer passion is nothing short of inspiring,
and whether or not you like Em is irrelevant; what
is clear is that he’s an insanely marvellous performer
who completely engages with, but also relates to,
the audience.
The The Anger Management Tour package itself
comes with a short documentary on the Anger Management tour,
which is less informative than it is downright hilarious.
But the key here is the live performance – whilst
most white folks should stay a million miles away
from the rap genre, Eminem makes it sound like he’s
an originator, not a pretender.
