Danny George
Wilson has been making albums with his brother
as the band Grand Drive for the better part of
the last decade. In that time he’s done it all – recorded
in big budget studios, had albums released around
the world, and toured far and wide. But his first
solo album is a very different beast.
For starters, The Famous Mad Mile feels
less like an album and more like an extended EP – only
nine tracks appear on it, with the ending of it filled
out by three live renditions of earlier songs. Also,
all the songs on it were recorded in intimate style,
in the living room of cohort Simon Alpin.
It gives The Famous Mad Mile an
extremely intimate vibe, reminiscent of someone
performing
the songs right in front of you rather than from
the speakers. While it’s not going to be to everyone’s
tastes – Wilson’s voice wavers all around the note,
rather than being on point on a consistent basis – there’s
no doubt that Wilson is a good songwriter with a
style all his own.
