Shrewsbury Town 3 v 0 Derby County
12 May 1984
English Division 2
Referee David Hutchinson of Harrogate awarded three dubious penalties - two scored by Shrewsbury and one missed by Derby - during the Second Division clash at Gay Meadow and then blew the final whistle 45 seconds early.
The reason for Hutchinson's rush appeared to be the reaction of Derby fans to Shrewsbury's second penalty two minutes from the end. Seats were smashed and thrown in pieces onto the pitch after Ross Maclaren (Shrewsbury) had scored from the spot.
The hard plastic seats skimmed dangerously on to the pitch and Derby had scarcely kicked off when Hutchinson called a halt.
He said later he had blown "smack on 90 minutes," but with Shrewsbury in command and the points secured it seems he felt it best to finish, which was probably a wise decision.
