Preview of the One Hour tournament 2002
This year has seen the
return of many old faces to The Gap Chess Club. Earlier in the year we saw
George Flitcroft-Smith come back, winning the Lightning and performing well in
the Flood Cup. Recently Ray Adams came back, often playing a friendly game at
the slower time controls. Tonight saw more players exercising the right of
return: Mark Wardle, who has not been a regular at the club since the late
1980s, and Jack Badenhorst & his son. Together with this year’s new members
(among others, John Curran & Garry Jarvis) it would seem that the One Hour
could have an entry of 15 to 20, depending on the number of junior entries. If
the entry is over 14, it is likely the tournament will be run on a Swiss
format. However the attactions of the round-robin format mean that the
possibility of running it as a 13 or 15 round tournament have not been entirely
ruled out. This option may be feasible with the quicker 1 hour guillotine
finish time control (it certainly would not be for the Flood Cup!!).
Flood Cup 2002 [Current Standings]
Highlights from tonight’s 3
games:
- Brian Willcock maintained his shockinngg run of form. Peter continues his good
form from last week when he almost toppled Gabriel;
– Doug Foster managed victory in one of the club’s oldest rivalries;
– James maintained his record, but keeps improving.
Brian’s game finished
prematurely after a blunder at move 35 conceded a two move mate, however after
the game it was demonstrated to everyone’s satisfaction that white’s extra pawn
on the b file would be enough to ensure victory with correct play.
