DOP’s note (from Hanoi, Vietnam!):
“The Hiller game was scheduled for tonight but not played. As Peter has 3
remaining games unplayed he must forfeit this game according to the rules of
the tournament. The Hussey-Foster game went for 38 moves while the
Willcock-Curran encounter lasted 58 moves.”
Stuart’s report: “Two one
hour games played. Brian v John draw with John battling the clock at the end
after 58 moves. Michael v Doug with a win to Doug after 38 moves when Michael
resigned.”
Brian’s report: “I played
the longest game of the night and as a consequence can give only my game result
and description…
I secured an early advantage positionally but then got ideas beyond my station
: a combination that would that would win the exchange and a pawn while making
John's uncastled King even more vulnerable. You will be astounded to learn that
my analysis was a tiny bit faulty and the combination led to the sac of my
Bishop for a pawn ,with some positional compensation. I failed to punish John
for his exposed King, suffered his castling and his being able to hang on to a
piece superiority into the endgame. Here weaknesses in his knowledge of the
endgame lost him any chance of victory. With only two Rook pawns on the
Kingside he exchanged off on the Queenside. With about six minutes left on his
clock and confident in being a Bishop up he offered a draw. As his Bishop was
of the wrong colour and there was an, unlikely, hope of time and my two
Kingside pawns giving victory with his King on the other side of the board I
saw no incentive to accept. Finally with my two pawns gone and John reduced to
Rook pawn and a wrong coloured Bishop, I accepted the inevitable and said it
was a draw. John did not believe me. I assured him it was a book draw. John did
not believe me. So we played until he delivered stalemate in about two moves.
Chris asserted he'd never played such a game. As I chased him with a meat
cleaver he claimed that he had meant that he'd never played a game in which
there'd been a wrong coloured Bishop and Rook pawn ending. I am not sure I
accept his inclination and will not be nominating him as Pres at the AGM.
Finally I wish to assure you that there is no truth in the rumour that the club
is going to give me a special encouragement ribbon when I finally win a game.”
