After discussions with Doug and Peter it was decided that their game should be awarded to Doug on forfeit as he had come on 3 nights to play the game and Peter had not shown up. This meant that a 3 way play-of would now take place to decide the Maiden Trophy. The first game was played tonight, with Peter overcoming John to firm as favourite to win the trophy. Over the next 2 Friday night Michael is scheduled to play Peter and John to complete the play-off round.

Andrew went a piece up early
on in both games against Paul. In game 2 Paul claimed that his downfall was
hastened by Doug's remark "I'm going to do this because I want to"
which came out during a friendly with Brian.
John managed a draw in his
first game with George. The final position was B+P+P v N+P with John in the
ascendancy but without hope of breaking through. George thought there was a
chance of a win on time, but John claimed a draw as he was in his last 2
minutes on the clock.
Harvey and Brian both
managed to whitewash James. Then Paul whitewashed Brian. Then Harvey
whitewashed Paul.
The crucial clash between
Andrew and George ended one-all. Andrew with white in the first game managed to
post his bishop on a secured d6 early on, in similar fashion to his Flood Cup
game with Peter Hiller. The bishop allied with his pawn formation totally
restricted George's R+N+B, and the game won itself from there. The second game
entered into many complexities before a blunder by Andrew allowed George to pin
his queen with a bishop and immediate resignation ensued.
Andrew 2 Paul 0
George 1½ John 0
Harvey 2 James 0
Paul 2 Brian 0
Andrew 1 George 1
Brian 2 James 0
Harvey 2 Paul 0

Very mixed results tonight.
Usually it was loser-gets-up and with the losing board evicted and
replaced. Initials used to protect the innocent (there were none!).
HQ + AR v GF + PE è Andrew d. Paul
HQ + PH v GF + PE è Paul d. Peter
HQ + AR v PE + GF è Andrew d. George
HQ + AR v PE + PH è Peter d. Andrew (who was distracted by Brian
conducting a conversation with him)
HQ + GF v PE + PH è George d Peter
Then Brian gave Andrew a few lessons in a series of conventional chess games
- although graciously letting Andrew win eeach game to give him confidence - the
transfer continued unrecorded until the last game of the night:
GF + HQ v PH + JH è James d. Harvey - and so for the first time since
the Wimbledon Doubles Final all those years ago the sister combination has
triumphed, with Harvey's unblemished record on the night sent to the shredders…
