Round one of the One Hour
saw a few minor upsets, but with most of the games going to script. Harvey was
able to gain a huge time advantage over Andrew, which saw the defending
champion unable to convert a one pawn advantage into victory. Mike Talbot won a
game against Stuart in which both players resigned!! Everyone thought Stuart
had won when Mike resigned. However, Stuart had earlier made a gross blunder
that left his queen en pris. Stuart resigned immediately, but Mike insisted on
continuing the game ‘that’s a stupid way to stuff up a perfectly good game’. At
the end of the day, the game was awarded to Mike. Marty made sure that James’
wait for his first win continues. With this win Marty achieved victory in his
first game in club tournaments at The Gap.
Gavin and Tony were both
left with about 2 minutes left (R+N+3P v R+5P) when they decided against the
lottery of a time scramble and agreed to a gentlemanly draw. Gabby, George and
Brian comfortably won their respective games. Brian did report a comical draw
offer from John as being the highlight of his game.
