A junior tournament was held
with 12 entries playing in 2 groups. Games were played at the rate of 5 minutes
per player. In group 1 visitor from Toowoomba Luthien Russell swept all aside
to win all of her games. There were no troubles at all until her last game when
Thomas Robinson had a straightforward mate in three with bishop and queen that
was somehow overlooked for ten consecutive moves, after which he lost on time.
Matthew Cannon once again overcame Timothy Stanley in a repeat of last month’s
result. Group 2 was won by Stephen Cannon who remained undefeated, only
dropping a draw to Kieran McHugh who gave a much improved showing. <Full Results>

Some at the club said that
Hell would freeze over before James Hiller won a tournament game. It certainly
was a cold night with the mercury plunging to near freezing, but James proved
the nay sayers wrong with his first win.
James won on time in against
Mike who played as if he had two hours on the clock. This was the 45th
games that James had played at the club since his debut on 30 June 2000. His
record has now improved to P 45 W 1 D 1 L 43.
See James’
interview below for more in this famous win.
In the other game Gavin overcame Gabby who said that he had missed a crucial move that Gavin made in the middle game. Gabby also graciously conceded that his opponent had played very well and deserved to win.

Two new players joined in the transfer tonight, with both Gavin and newcomer Simon Williams (recently of the Old Dart) both showing much enthusiasm, and almost as much skill. The Hillers both participated but with limited success.

- J Hiller
“You watch the big house,
don’t you?”
- M Talbot, to James, presumably enquiringg about the Big Brother series
“Everybody reads Ralph”
- J Hiller
Upon being told that we
would be playing Samford Valley again
“Why don’t you line up an interesting club like the Coorparoo Gay Chess Club”
- M Talbot (who would know if anyone wouldd)
“Never over-estimate a
Hiller”
- A Robinson after copping a bad pairing ffor a game of transfer
“The jackal was awaiting
my demise”
- J Hiller referring to brother Peter who was hovering waiting to take his seat
in a loser gets up round of transfer
James Hiller post-match interview
TGCC: “How do you feel?”
JH: “I’m exhilarated with joy”
TGCC: “What’s your next
step?”
JH: “To beat John Curran” (said without a moment’s hesitation) “John Curran
said that he’s a better player than me and he will beat me next week”
TGCC: “And how did you react
to this sledging incident?”
JH: “Well, I was offended. I don’t want to make too much of a big deal of it.
But I’ll use it as motivation”
TGCC: “Anything further
you’d like to add?”
JH “I don’t want John Curran reading this”
TGCC: “Congratulations on
your maiden victory from all at the club”
JH: “Thank you”

Editor’s note
An email response to this
interview was received the next day:
Dear Editor
I'd like to add to the comments made by a Mr James Hiller.
Although I don't remember saying I was a better player than James, I do
remember thinking it.
Looking forward to Friday's clash!
John Curran
