Dr. Don Propp (aka. Squire) from Naniamo joined us in Kitkatla. Here seen in the Galley of The Good Ol’ Boys chefing up one of his Thai specialties whilst on the fishing hole. This was the scene moments before Leif’s 110 lb. Hali hit. This caused a slight delay in serving dinner that evening.
This is juvenile Herring concentrated into a tight ball by diving birds & fish working them from below & Seagulls working from above. The herring writhe to get to the centre for safety and in so doing boil above the waters surface. If you can get in the vicinity where this phenomenon is occurring you’ll often catch a Salmon.

Whilst we're living in the field like this, and constantly witnessing abundant life everywhere, all making their living in some way or another, one is forced to ponder this in trying to understand the food chain and how all creatures fit in.
When jigging for Salmon, especially when there is “Feed” (Herring) around, occasionally we will catch a diving bird. Unfortunately this Marbled Murrelet tangled with our gear but the surgeon Squire carefully freed it and sent it on its way.
The remote Moore Islands west of Aristazabal Is. is a magical spot that very few people get the oportunity to visit. These islands were an ancient Indian hunting, gathering area and is designated as an Indian reserve. This old rock cairn exists on a small rock in a narrow tidal pass between the two Islands. The native name for these special islands translates to “The only child”.
