/13/01 6:42pm History of the Grip Sacs
There is a very rich tradition in The Grip Sacs. Here is a brief history of this dynasty.
-1996: The dynasty starts here. Jon Pouliot, captain Matt Phinney, and myself created the greatest team in the history of bowling. There were others on our team. But they were not worthy of being called a Grip Sac. This was followed by the worst moment in Grip ?Sac history. We were in a playoff for third place. (Which would give us a trophy). Anyway, we were playing an all-girls team. And it was all up to Pouliot. He had to get 6 pins in the last frame. He put the ball in the gutter the first time, but we had confidence in him. So he sets up, and one of the girls yells , "hey, you got a nice ass." I've never seen Pouliot flop like that, it went right in the gutter. It was the worst moment in Grip Sac history.
This year, we retired Matt Phinney's number. We put his number in the rafters of Brunswick Lanes. He will always be one of the greats. Jon Pouliot had a career threatening injury, so I had to pick up the slack for the Grip Sacs. I stepped up as team captain. But, unfortunately, it was a dismal year.
The rookies came out of the woodwork this year. Tim Trull, Marc Tardiff, Mike Langlois, and myself as the captain put on the Grip Sac colors. The rookies were excellent, and I contributed with my best year in my career. We were in first place for a long time. But then the omen happened. We needed a fifth player. So we brought in the veteran, Jon Pouliot. I figured we would give him one more chance to get a trophy. That was the beginning of the end. We went from first to last. Very quickly. This was a very bad decision on my part. I apologize. It turned into a terrible year.
I dedicated last year to Matt Phinney, and we came through with a trophy for him. There were no sophomore slumps for Tim Trull, Marc Tardiff, Mike Langlois. They were all great. We unified as a team. We had our run in first, but we couldn't hold on. We came together in the end, and ended with the best record the Grip Sacs have ever had. We ended in 4th position, which is good enough for a trophy. It was the best year in Grip Sacs history, and it was my pleasure to be the captiain of this team. Thank you guys.
We lost one of our core guys this year. Tim Trull did not bowl this year, and no matter how much we tried, he just couldn't be replaced. It was a traditional Grip Sac year with our first-place run that just fell short. We ended in 5th place, so we slipped a little bit from 1999. There was a shining star that came through. Brenda Lee made her Grip Sacs debut, and she showed week after week why she belongs on the team. She is a great bowler and a great person. We're hoping for a good run in 2001.
