Ask Dr. Truth

by Hall Monitor staff psychologist Sherrie Truth

In this column, Dr. Truth advises a "Screaming Me-Me" and discusses her  controversial new look.

Dear Dr. Truth: You're always preaching about how we should "live to give" and never take advantage of each other, but I think that way of thinking is for big-time losers! I've been taking advantage of my friends for years and I am living the sweet life because of it! For example, I have a friend who works in a swanky department store. I've been getting him to purchase designer outfits for me for some time now, all at an amazing discount. He knows better than to expect any kind of gratitude. As far as I'm concerned, it's my entitlement -- he owes me, because he knew I'd want to take advantage of his discount when he got the job. Considering the first class workmanship of the items I get and the fact that I'm paying next to nothing for them, I'm making out like a bandit! When it comes time to cough up the small amount I owe him, I cry like a baby and complain about how he's ripping me off. I actually think he likes the abuse I give him, because he's always willing to get me more whenever I ask! The world is full of suckers, Sherrie baby, and you're living in a dream world if you think people like me are going to stop using them! --Leeching in Hybla Valley

Dear Leech: You're absolutely right. I've always known there were losers like you out there and that there's precious little I can do to stop you. My sermons haven't worked on you in the past, so why should they now? Someday, though, you'll take stock of your possessions, and discover that there's not a friend around to admire you in your designer drag. I hope you're squirrelling away all that money you're saving on clothes, because it won't be long before you'll have to pay just to get someone to sit in the same room with you, and believe me, honey, they won't be giving you any discounts for that!

Dear Dr. Truth: What's the deal with the new picture above your column? Have you had plastic surgery? It doesn't even look like you! (Which is to say it looks pretty good!) Why did you feel the need to change, Doc? I always thought you said real beauty came from the inside?-- Stefan from Wilmington

Dear Stefan: Well, in spite of that backhanded complement, I will tell you that no, I haven't had any plastic surgery, but I did have a fabulous makeover and image change during my recent visit to the Juergen Matias Spa and Beauty Enhancement Center in Palm Springs. It's amazing what a few sea salt body scrubs, a new hairdo and a pair of stylish glasses can do for a gal! While I agree that inner beauty is the most important, let's face it, honey: the cake always tastes better when the icing looks good!
