My Tubal Reversal Story
Page 2
We started out with the idea that we were not going to tell anyone of our plans because, I for one, did not want to hear from anyone "that's ridiculous" or "you are making the wrong decision," plus I did not want to feel like I was in the spotlight after the surgery - "Did it happen yet?  Yet?  How about now??"  But, every time I would talk to my mom, I felt like I was keeping something from her.  I knew that she would not for one minute understand why we made this decision.  But I had to tell her.  I said, "Mom, can I tell you something that is really important to me without you telling me I am making the wrong decision?" and I talked to her for 30 minutes about it.  She was good, and listened, but I can tell that she just doesn't understand.  And now there are the comments:  "HOW much will day care cost for a baby???  Are you sure you know what you're doing???" - this kind of thing.  I can't take that.  I don't need another "conscience" second-guessing me the rest of this time.

Dr. Berger's nurse called this morning to discuss my tubal ligation records.  Dr. Berger is in Chapel Hill, NC.  The nurse said my chances for a successful reversal are good.  The type of tubal that was done on me, a Pomeroy, has the second highest success rate.  I talked with her about my concerns about the scar tissue and she said that it really is not a concern, that they do this surgery on women with a lot of scar tissue frequently.  She said I may lose a little more blood, and it may take a little longer, but it is still possible.  I doubt we'll be going with Dr. Berger, though, since he is all the way in North Carolina, but he is also supposed to be one of the best along with Dr. Levin.  His fee is $6,500 but that does not include hotel stay after the surgery, and they offer no financing.  I plan on asking Dr. Constantine about these other doctors on Friday.  It would be great if we found out we could have Dr. Constantine do the surgery since he is so close, but I want to make sure we get the best doctor with the best chances for success.

We got a video in the mail from Dr. Berger yesterday and watched it last night.  He does the surgery on an outpatient basis, in the clinic!  This made both of us a little nervous - what happens if something goes wrong?!?!  The video was great - it had 2 segments from shows similar to 48 Hours, and then 3rd one was from The Learning Channel.  It showed an entire tubal reversal operation.  It was scary, but not nearly as frightening as a c-section, so I can handle it.

Needless to say, we did not hit it off with Dr. Constantine.  He only does reversals once or twice a month.  So, I had my telephone consultation with Dr. Levin on the 24th.  He was wonderful - friendly, supportive, and answered any and all of my many questions.  He feels we have an 85% chance of achieving a successful pregnancy.  Of course, he said we could have as many more children as we want after the reversal.  He seemed very laid back and talked to me like he was just the guy next door, not one of the most successful reversal specialists in North America.  We applied for financing the same day and are still waiting to hear back on that.  I am nervous, but it is in the Lord's hands.
