TINY PLANES END GLOBAL JAUNT Smallest Planes Ever to Attempt Trip United Press Teterboro, New Jersey, Dec. 11 George W. Truman and Clifford V. Evans, Jr. 2 pilots and they flew 2 pipers on this historic trip: Pipers named: "City of The Angels" and "City of Washington" "Flying wing to wing across oceans and terrain never before spanned by such tiny aircraft they circled the world on a 23,000 mile route with stops in 23 countries." "On the most dangerous hop of the flight, from Hokkaido Island in northern Japan over the North Pacific to the Aleutians, they were accompanied by an Army Flying Fortress Escort. Six hours and 45 minutes out of Nemuro, the second B-17, named Nursemaid, took over the patrol and went with us to Shemya. The Forts did a magical job of keeping track of the Cubs in the overcast. Rarely could they see us and the precipitation was so heavy that it completely "snowed up" their radar scopes, making it impossible to spot us in them. Nobody could tell whether they were ahead of us, behind us or to one side. They flew at a higher altitude so we weren't worried about collision. If we had been forced down in that stuff, Nursemaid could not have seen us, Lieutenant Claude Nelon, the pilot, and Lieutenant Bill Jones, the navigator, would have to had to drop completely by guess the rescue powerboat carried under Nursemaid's belly. (The boat descends under three parachutes.) To read more about this story click on " Piper PA-12" |
