They were two bars that was made for this medal to show what Country the 30 consective days of service occured in. They were "Germany" and "Japan". |

National Defence Service Medal is given for honorable active military service as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States including the Coast Guard, between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954, (Korean War Period) and between Jan. 1, 1961 and Aug. 14, 1974 (Vietnam War Period). Members of the National Guard and Reserves were not usually eligible, however if any member of these units became eligible for the award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or the Vietnam Service Medal, between Jan. 1, 1961 and Aug. 14, 1974, the person would be eligible for this medal also. |

Vietnam Service Medal is given to all service members of the Armed Forces who between July 4, 1965, and March 28, 1973, served in the following areas of Southeast Asia: In Vietnam and the contiguous waters, and airspace, in Thailand, Laos or Cambodia or the airspace therefore or in the direct support of military operations in Vietnam. |

Armed Forces Reserve Medal is given to any individual who completes 10 years honorable satisfactory service in any of the reserve components of the United States armed forces, including the National Guard, provided such service is within a period of 12 consecutive years. |

Air Force Longevity Service Award is given to all service members of the U.S. Air Force who complete four years of honorable active or reserve military service with any branch of the United States armed forces. |

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal is given to all service members for six months service in the Republic of Vietnam between 1965 and 1973 or if wounded, captured or killed in action during that period of service. |

Until Lt. Col. Jones completed his college education in 1960, receiving his degree from the University of Maryland, Heidelberg, Germany in 1960 his status was Reservist. The degree in Military Science convinced the Air Force he should be a "regular officer" and put him on the promotion list along side of West Point Graduates. |
The Bronze Oak Leaf Device on the ribbon bar is indicating the additional years over four years of honorable active duty service. Lt. Col. Jones served a total of 29 years honarable Active Duty Service. |
