Profile: Paul Robey: Paul
joined Nottingham Hospital Radio (NHR) around Christmas of 1980, spending
eight years and what Paul describes as '...a thoroughly enjoyable period of
my life...' He presented various weekend shows, becoming Programme
Controller a couple of years later on when David Lloyd left to start a
stunning radio career at Radio Trent.
Paul had maintained an ambition to work in commercial radio for some time, and
the experience gained at NHR merely added to that level of
determination. As a result, he was offered some relief work at Radio
Trent in 1983 and then with Radio Broadland in 1987, both
long before the GWR acquisitions.
Radio Trent offered Paul a full-time position in September in 1987.
GEM-AM launched in 1988 on AM frequencies 945 for Derbyshire, 999 for
Nottinghamshire & 1260 for Leicestershire. He was appointed 'Music Co-ordinator'
for the neighbouring Midlands Radio plc stations, GEM, Leicester Sound and
Trent FM. (the latter across
Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire.)
When GWR took control, Paul became PC or Programme Controller of GEM and
also the local Research Manager, carrying out surveys for the East Midlands
including Northampton and Peterborough, areas that were also GWR'd. In 1997,
the PC role encapsulated Classic Gold's entire AM network services.
Whereabouts: Paul left the dominant GWR in August 1998, and formed part of the team that launched a smaller independent local radio station. And Paul is now the Managing Director and PC of that station, 107.9 Fosseway Radio, serving a population of 160,000 in Hinckley, Nuneaton and the surrounding areas. Paul used to present the mid-morning show. In October 2001 he took on even further managerial controls when he became Programme Controller for the entire Lincs-FM group, looking after music and presentation matters at their stations, Compass FM (Grimsby & North Lincs), Fosseway Radio, Lincs FM, Ridings FM, Rutland Radio and Trax FM.
LATEST NEWS: Thanks to AIRCHECK correspondent Simon Parry who reports that In November 2002, Paul left Lincs FM and is due to be Programme Controller at SAGA 106.6 / 101.4 across the East Midlands when it launches in early 2003.
